Prabhu the Moron is up to his old tricks again. He is trying to pit me against Kaumudi, when it was Prabhu the Moron who spoke derogatarily to Kaumudi in the first place.
Oh! Prabhu the Moron, don't you have anything vulgar to say in this thread? LOL!

And I think, JMO, telegus are more prone to saying 'sh' than 's', just like the way Bengalis substitute 'B' for 'V' and Oriyans cant pronounce 'sh', they say 's'.

Telugu singers generally pronounce "Irukkudhu" as "Irukkyudhu" or "Irikudhu". SPB is famous for this besides Janaki, of course in their yesteryear songs.
TMS was famous for "Vaigkkai" instead "Vazhkkai", which was criticized by Seergazhiyaar!!

Prabhu
Your friend is right. There are three "Sa"s in telugu. The "sa" and "sha" are the same as in "sa"langai oli and sure"sh" respectively. The third "sa" we have (and possibly present even in malayalam) is used for words like "S"ivudu (Sivan), "Sa"nivaram (sanikkizhamai) etc. As your friend says, this can be only said in person/phone. But I guess this is the genesis of the problem with telugus atleast. When "si"vudu becomes sivan in thamizh, they tend to use the third "sa" (out of the habitual use in telugu)which is what is being discussed here. This is of course IMHO.
Reg "gult" - I thought this is a very IIT thing where everyone's language had a twisted nickname to it. But I personally don't like it. However, I won't and can't force you to say it the way I like it. It is upto you to say gult or telugu or whatever. Full democracy! In any case "TCS(Telugu Consultancy Services)" was funny. I didn't know that so many telugus worked for TCS. That tells how many telugus there are in Chennai.

What's up with you? Are you trying (really hard!!) to make a point or what?

funny u guys should bring this (sa, sha thing) up. I used to wonder the same - if it is a telugu thing.
I absolutely love the song "thendralukku endrum vayathu pathinaaru" sung by SPB probably in the early 70s. In that he says..
pattu chelai kattum sholai..(i assume it was meant to be solai or cholai)
I found it cute though!

Help:
Amudham Font does not see to work with the Vikatan link. Is there a "all-rounder" font that can be set to automatically upload when I hit these tamil webpages/sites?
Could some good samaritan do me a favour and post a response and a link and a TUTORIAL (I am an eager learner) where I might find this "ellam" font and how do I go about instaling it in my computer?
I am curious about this article, and would like to contribute my two-cents' but as I am unable to read it...Please help me spew (It'll be a good show, promise :-)

Naaz,
unfortunately the "ellam" font has been found to be so elusive that everyone started saying "Ellam Siva Mayam" (but the telugu people were still saying "Ellam Shiva Mayam")
try going to vikatan.com main page and look for a link that says "download font" or "font problem?" or "biriyani ready, font thaayar" etc.., and follow the instructions there. after installing the vikatan font, you will be read any vikatan page in tamil without needing to learn the swear word-like characters that usually come up. enjoy:)

Sriram -
I did log on to vikatan homepage and tried the download font link. "This Page Cannot Be Displayed"nnu solliththu Oru Aangila Mami - Kobamai. :-)
What gives? I have also not been able to read all the write-ups in the "special" page for SOTD...
A conspiracy theorist might have something to say about this elusive tamizh font that doesn't put out on my computer...But I am an optimist. I'll try again. Thanks.

Why does Jency use 'ha' instead of 'ga' on some occasions? Most malayalees upto Ernakulam/Thrissur side pick up tamil words very easily. Good eg is Swarnalatha(Palakkad, so no probs). Probably Jency is from Kottayam side..south keralites dont pick up tamil too soon.
BTW, among singers from AP, SPB and Shailaja were totally at ease...SPB being an Anna University product.
Kaumudi: You may be right there...I suppose slang for ethnic origins like Tam, Bong, Gult, Gujju, Mallu start from IITs. Upto 40% of most IIT M.Techs are 'gults' and an equal proportion of 'telugus' work for TCS offices worldwide :)

And if the 'sh' pronunciation is due to sanskrit influence, how come most mallu singers pronounce 's' correctly, since malayalam is supposed to be closer to sanskrit?
