When Kannadasan neram was in the production, I provided tons of information for the programme, as well as voices of MSV, KVM, Pugazhendhi, Kamalahasan, Nagesh, Gemini Ganesan, Sivakumar, to enrich the programme. I also gave the speech of Karunanithi in praise of Kannadasan. Dont you remember listening to those?
I know Kannadasan and Ilayaraja had clashed. That was after Thiyagam. Kannadasan wrote in Ceinema Express "Kaatiley suLLi poRukkum pasangaL ellaam en paattukku mettu pOda vanthuttanunga" This was reference to Ilayaraja. That is said to be the reason why they did not work closely for some time. That may also be the reason why IR did not allow Kannadasan to write for Azhagey Unnai Aarathikkiren and Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu. Kannadasan is quick tempered, that we know. But fights in cinema cirlce are like cinema fights themselves-temporary.

you have requested me to unearth treasure. It is just impossible to give them in entirety. But marunthukkaka sila mattum:
1. KVM is known for his depth in Carnatic music, but prefers to avoid modern tunes. Kannadasan need not sit with KVM to compose songs. Kannadasan used to send the songs through someone. KVM used to compose the songs in his absencea, and does not look for Kannadasan to make changes in the songs. One such song is Mannavan Vanthanadee Thozhi- which I have mentioned off and on.
KVM had an excellent assistant-Pugazhendhi, a Keralite by birth. But his family settled in Tamilnadu long ago and became very much Tamilised. He used to insist Kannadasan in giving "poems" and not mere songs for Tamil film, meaning, he demanded for quality. Pugazhendhi had composed several songs for KVM one is "Marainthirunthu Paarkkum Marmamenna" Kannadasan asked Pugazhendhi in what raga he was composing the sonng. Pugazhendhi replied it was "Shanmugapriya" Then Kannadasan composed the song with the word Shanmuga appearing several times.

@. MSV and Kannadasan had worked for several films before but they became intimate only after Maalayitta Mangai. (Plese see thread on TR Mahalingam) MSV had knowledge of all the music of India. He was agenius in his own way. But his knowledge on Tamil was sorry to say not that deep.
Secondly, he made it a point to keep Kannadasan around him when composing songs, as he wanted Kannadasan to change words where tune does not flow, or to improve. But the song Ezhu SurangalukkuL ethanai paadal was written with about 25 charanam and passed to MSV through KBalachander. KB chose the best of them and MSV composed the tune. That became an award winner song for Vanee Jayaram.
When Nenjil Ore Alayam was in the production stage, somebody went and poked to Kannadasan that MSV had said something damaging about him. Kannadasan was so sad that he wrote
"Sonnathu Neethanaa,
Sol sol sol en uyire"
When MSV saw the greatness and the power of Kannadasan's ability MSV used Kannadasan to experiment his own talents several times. This again is too deep. one or two examples:
a) Ponmagal Vanthaaal from Sorgam was composed using fully wester tunes.
b) Kettukkodee urumi Melam from Pattikkada Pattanama was a combination of east and west.
c) The first Tamil song with most number of musical instruments was Engey Nimmatheee from Puthiya Paravai.
d) The first time MSV ever sang a small piece was when credit was shown in Pasamalar.
f) Kannadasan and MSV took a challenge in the film Mahadevi. Kannadasan wanted to use K. Jamunarani for a sad song which was never typical of her. MSV said it would be flop. Kannadasan said it would be a hit. Jamunaranee said if she failed Kannadasan's expectation she would return her fees twofold. Finally the challenge was taken up. Jamunaranee sang Kamugar Nenjil Neethiyillai ver well and Kannadasan won.

I would like to know why MSV-TKR split - one I have heard/read - TKR was an alcoholic. If it is already available in the archives, someone please point me to it.

what is the best possible source to read more about the great kannadaasan? Are there any resources online, or any books that talk about him,his life style,his songs etc....any help in the right direction would be appreciated very much. Thanks in advance

I think I will dilute the story and provide only the essence.
Though both MSV and TKR teamed up in the film Panam of NSK to compose music for films, it was MSV who did most of the work. Together they had composed for 110 films. In fact when CR Subbaraman died half way while Devadas was in the production stage, they composed the song Ulakey Maayam. That was their first song together. The also did rerecording for Devadas.
MSV composed tunes while TKR only concentrated on BGM, especially violin. Whenever MSV and TKR composed you could hear violin accompanying the voice of the singers. TKR was a genius in violin. Otherwise it was MSV who did the major work. Later TKR succumbed to alcohol and never turned upon time to the studio. Even if he did he used to come drunk, and was not able to contribute. Many strong figures saw this and requested MSV to stand on his own as they knew that MSV did not really need TKR. When they split after Aayirathil Oruvan, MSV composed excellent songs for Nee and continued for a very long time. TKR started off with Sathu Mirandaal and ended with 40 films. Both started again in Engiruntho Vanthaan with latest touch, but failed miserably.

Manisekaran yes i remember all those in the kannadasan neram but i think the programme was aired somewhere in 1996(when i was in singapore).
I dont recall your name being mentioned. Aaha im really surprised by the amount of contributions you had made to that programme. Thanks again(though late:))

MSV and TKR have recently tuned a nice catchy
tune for the Raj TV serial, Ganga Yamuna Saraswathy. Two
weeks ago Raj TV showed the making of the song. It
was so nice to see the two pokkaivaai kizhavargaL
explaining the sandhams of the song to Hariharan
with the same old enthusiasm as the olden days.
Hariharan sang it with a lot of happiness. The song is a
beautiful melody. It stars as puNNiya neerOdu

The song manthira punnagai miNNidum mEnagai from manal kayiru has excellent fast-paced flute interludes with violins,tabla and guitar blended with some excellent humming by uma ramanan. SPB is so natural in rhythm which is one of the hallmarks of his voice. And does vali use ink or 'kaLLu' for his pen?, the moment you tell him 'peN' , he comes up with some mind-boggling descriptions. He usually flavors with some vulgar words which are unparliamentary to discuss here.

I like to discuss on a very delicate,sensitive topic-Kannadasan and sexuality. Given to his time and age, Kannadasan has come out with some exceptionally explicit lyrics. He has also touched on homosexuality. Now now i know that this a flaming topic but since i started the thread as kannadasan padaippugal, i think we should cover all sects of his kavidhais.

Ramki: I don't think there's anything wrong with this topic as far as
it remains decent like the way you've written. I do not agree with
your interpretation of unnazhagai kaNdu koNdaal>. The
Lover is saying in an extreme way about his mate's beauty..
she is soooo beautiful that 'impossibile' things
can occur. I don't think the great kavinjar had any silly thought
such as L'ism in mind. In any case, this line is much less
direct than VM's nee sellum theruvil 'sila' peNgaLai vida maattEn.

talking of sauch topics is like playing with 'fire'. still, there's something i want to say in this regard.
in the song "telephone manipOl" in indian, a part goes:
"nee pOgum theruvil aaNgaLai vida maattEn" (understandable)
"sila peNgaLai vida maattEn" (inga thaan udhaikkudhu). IMO, VM is trying to bring in the possessiveness of the hero over the heroine by saying that he wouldn't let men, and women with alternative orientation, near his love. sign of the times, i guess.
