Best Sentimental Song
A record 12 entries for this category! Even Ayya voodu made it as an entry! Since it was a difficult choice, anyone who needs to record a cassette of sentimental songs, need to look no further than here! The winner is:
Song: Yen paattu yen paattu
No. of nominations: 3
Singers: ??
Music: Ilayaraaja
Movie: Poomani
Closest contenders: Veesum kaatrukku (my favourite!) with two nominations.
Best Duet
Many good songs were nominated for this category but the winning one is truly well-deserved:
Song: Vennilavey vennilavey
No. of nominations:6
Singers: Hariharan & SS
Music: AR Rahman
Movie: Minsaara Kanavukkal
Closest contenders:Oru pattaam poochchi and Yen veettu jannal with three nominations each.
Best Combo
Due to lack of understanding or otherwise, the entries for Best Combo went haywire, with people, movies and songs being nominated. Combo should actually mean a combination of two or more parties. Due to this confusion, this category is scrapped.

An Error!
Best Sad Song category was repeated. The second one should have been Best Love Song. Please disregard the second one, which is amended as follows:
Best Love Song
It was almost impossible for any other song to win in this category. 1997 will surely be remembered as the year Love got its Respect (Kaathalukku Mariathei) Almost two-thirds of the votes went to this song:
Song: Yennai thaalaatta varuvaala
No. of nominations: 13
Singer: Hariharan
Music: Ilayaraaja
Movie: Kaathalukku Mariathei
Closest contenders:Vennilavey vennilavey and Manam virumbuthei with two nominations each.

Lyricist - Find of the year
Choosing this category was not difficult as there were not many newcomers! The winner is:
Personality: Palani Bharathi
No. of nominations: 4
Closest contender: Arivumathi with two nominations.
Female Singer - Find of the year
This was one category that was closely contended and the winner is none other than a relative of a TFM personality :-)):
Personality: Sandhya
No. of nominations: 6
Closest contender: Bavatharani with five nominations.
Male Singer - Find of the year
Although there were several nominations, there was absolutely no questions on who was the best:
Personality: SPB Charan
No. of nominations: 7
Closest contender: None.
MD - Find of the year
I was surprised at how many people found VIP good, inspite of it being a one-time wonder for the MD in question. Anyhow, IR's vaarisu won hands down with his compositions in Aravindan:
Personality: Yuvan Shankar Raja
No. of nominations: 8
Closest contender: Ranjit Barot with five nominations

Song best picturised
Choreography played a big part in picking this winner. Judging from the nominations, Minsara Kanavukkal had some of the best song picturisation! The winner is:
Song: Ooh la la ..... Maanaaamathurei
No. of nominations: 7
Closest contender: Vennilavey vennilavey with five nominations.
Movie with best BGM
It is universally accepted that BGM is IR's forte and it is no surprise he is the winner here too. Though the movie bombed badly, it is a pleasant surprise that its BGM is still remembered by many:
Movie: Devadhai
No. of nominations: 9
Closest contender: Kaathalukku Mariyaathei with three nominations.

Personal plea to Ravi - The splitting into old responses/new responses has nullified my intention of a build-up of suspense. Could you please (just this once) leave this as one whole thread?

Best Album
There was a keen competition between two great albums. And the winner is:
Movie: Kaathalukku Mariyaathei
No. of nominations: 8
Closest contender: Minsara Kanavugal with six nominations.
Best Lyricist
Whilst Vairamuthu contributed several good as well as junk songs, it was Kaathalukku Maritahei that worked magic for the winner:
Personality: Palani Bharathi
No. of nominations: 11
Closest contender: Vairamuthu with five nominations.

Best Female Singer
1997 belonged to an established singer, closely followed by Bavatharani, who showed immaturity at first before blossoming into a voice to be reckoned with. But the winner is:
Personality: Chitra
No. of nominations:9
Closest contender: Bavatharani with five nominations.
Best Male Singer
Although there were no clear indications in the beginning, two favourites kept on coming soon after. If 1997 was Chitra's then it was also surely Hariharan's. Presictably, the results are:
Personality: Hariharan
No. of nominations: 8
Closest contender: SP Bala with six nominations.

Best Song of the Year
As Arun had commented, this song raised the sentiments of all IR fans. It's runner-up could not even come close! It is indeed a very good song about love and its comes as no surprise that the winner is:
Personality: Yennai thaalaatta varuvaala
No. of nominations:12
Closest contender: Manam virumbuthei with three nominations.
Best Music Director
Based on the number of fans he has in this forum, no one will be surprised at who the winner of this award is. But what surprised me was the number of votes obtained by his closest contender. The winner of Best MD for 1997 is ...... (Drum rolls please....)
Personality: Music Maestro, Isaignani, Dr. ILAYARAAJA!
No. of nominations: 14
Closest contender: AR Rahman with seven nominations.

Guys - Go ahead and make your comments now on why you selected a certain song or a personality.
My choice of Manam virumbuthei was based on the fact it was enjoyed accross generations, by my two-year old son, and my 75-year old mother. It also crossed ethnic boundaries, when enjoyed by my Indonesian house help. :-))

Manam Virumbuthe definitely is one of the best from TFM '97. It has the melting voice of Unnikrishnan who elevates the song to a higher level.. (I personally like him better than all the present singers due to his classical voice base..)
But the catch is in lyrics (IMO...) It has got some harsh sounding words such as Nenjukkul nee thanadi.., especially words ending with ..adi Compared to this the soft melody of Ennai thalatta varuvalo.. literally flows like a cool breeze, both in music as well as lyrics..IMO, that has done the trick..

NOV :
I have heard the original of manam virumbuthey (Motherland from LSubramaniam's Super Instinct Album) and dEvA's cover version is pathetic when compared to it !

NOV, congratulations on originating, coordinating, moderating a complex topic and for successfully( with nice personal comments ) summarizing TFM-DF award ceremony( I felt like I had personally attended one! ).
TFM Surfers, please give NOV a very big( well deserved ) hand!!!
Given that this DF is loaded with die-hard IR fans, I don't know how many people truly believe that the voting and the results are not skewed - I mean, how many people truly put aside their personal bias and voted honestly - something that we will never find the true answer for and something that will keep many of us wondering.
But, yet, I feel this was a fun exercise and worth continuing this tradition year-after-year-after-years!!!
( One comment about the "Idaiyil Pugunthu Kuzhappiya Mr. Uthaikkuthey's comment: I think Mr. Uthaikkuthey was being rhetoric about a song that was declared as the "Best Sad Song" and yet happened to start ironically with the word "Aanandham" )

If you feel badly I can make a separate page out of the results, once you mail them to us and leave this thread only for comments. Is that alright?
