Hi
The other day, I was talking to someone about Illayaraja and discussions on this forum. He said, that Illayaraja has, in the past, lifted most of his tunes from western music and had Indianised it, so to speak. Maybe, we were listening to Illaiyaraja at a time( the '70s and '80s) when our "exposure" to western music was limited and hence didn't know it. At least I didn't know it utill this person told me about it. But, with the kind of exposure we have today to music of different kinds, it is very easy to spot a "lifted tune". So, ARR's is a case of bad timing I guess :-)

Is this "someone" a Lord of Music.? or the highest authority in th World of Music Patents.??
Can he give a list of songs that Indian Music Directors or TFM MD's copied from Western.??
I have plenty of "someone's" who claim otherwise.??

Srinath,
I do apologize, if you think I had provoked you too much, and, if you think I was responsible for the 'tragedy of errors'. Anyway, my intention was not that. Again, sorry if I had created some tension unknowingly.
I read all your comments in the PS-SJ thread, ARR petti thread, Rahman bashers thread and I liked some of your comments very much. I understood that you had good knowledge in music. I repeat, I never thought my words would have irritated you.
Ok. Cool it.

What can I say - I am embarrassed ! Let us put this sordid episode behind us and get on with better postings in the DF. I am sure we provided some amusement for the other DFers :), albeit at the cost of our own dignity. Apology accepted, and my own apology tendered.

I am also repeating what you have said below.

Guys,
Is Monalisa a dubbed version of the Hindi Kabhie Na Kabhie? The songs in the Hindi films went virtually unnoticed because of the film's failure. ARR had scored a couple of good numbers: Tu meri Nigahon Pe Chhayee in Hindi by Hariharan was the best! Great Western classical style orchastration with virtually no beats!! An Amazing number by ARR. This one has been rendered competently by Unni Krishnan in Monalisa, though the lyrics were much better in Hindi( RA file available at http://www.mail-bag.com/rahman.shtml )
The number is: Endan Uyiril
Check it out!
In the same page, there is a song 'Padakali'; A real tonguw-twister of a Malayalam song. Quite novel. (M G Sreekumar??: Probably he got to sing the Mallu lines in Dil Se after this one)

I just hope Ameet does not mind my posting this here :-) Now, all those who claim National acceptance of ARR's music can take a second look at this :-)

I've heard a lot of my N.Indian friends say that they like Jatin-Lalit's music better than ARR's (thought I differ with them). I guess, different people have different tastes.

Hi
I have an extremely humungous PROBLEM. Please help me.
Is there an IR Bashers thread? I may need to use one.
- From: Srinath (@ 167-225-48.ipt.aol.com) on: Thu Dec 17 00:42:08 EST 1998
aruvi:
If you are looking to bash IR, you really do have an 'extremely humongous' problem !
IR bashing goes on in every single thread in the forum. You would be ill-advised to start one by that name. We are all desperately trying to maintain peace in the DF. Bashing IR will only worsen the situation. Bashing ARR is a natural phenomenon - because he is a relative newcomer and his talents (or lack thereof) have to be proved amongst ourselves by discussing, praising and criticizing his music. IR has had his fair share of that during his heydays and has established himself as a true genius - what's more, he is being subjected to unfair ridicule even now. Tell me now, do you still feel the need to bash IR ? Just today I was telling Ravi (one of the founders of the TFMPage) that it was nice to see new-comers staying away from ARR vs IR fights, which are a regular phenomenon here. Please don't belie all our expectations by getting entangled in these never ending debates - rejuvenate the more reasonable threads here and try to turn a blind eye to what might "appear" to be unjust. A lot of unrequited advice, I know ;-) but hey ! who's stopping me ? :-)))

Srinath
I was not looking for an IR bashing thread. He's my favorite MD for pete's sake. But I was just being sarcastic because of all these people dissing poor ARR. Give him a break. What has he got to prove to anyone. That's all I want to know.
- From: Udhaya (@ 205.218.142.217) on: Thu Dec 17 16:06:29 EST 1998
Isn't it ironic that someone starts a thread,"Rahman Bashers" probably disturbed by all the Rahman Bashing that goes on in the DF, and now this thread has become a licensed anything goes orgy of ARR bashing.

Aw ! C'mon Udhaya ! it isn't even serious bashing ! :-) And to a certain extent, it helps keep the ire concentrated in one place ! Even I tried to remind someone that this was NOT an anti-ARR thread :-) But to no effect ! Anyways...what are you doing here, btw ? We should declare these threads off limits for non-partisans like you :-))
- From: Srinath (@ ss08.nc.us.ibm.com) on: Thu Dec 17 16:18:08 EST 1998
..and bashing is a term that we use rather loosely, I, for one, use it the way I would use the word 'criticize' or maybe 'analyze' !!! And now, let's hear it for the little fella (ARR) - "Three Cheers for ARR ! Bash ! Bash ! BASH 'IM ! Bash ! Bash ! BASH 'IM ! Bash ! Bash ! BASH 'IM !!!" :-))))

- From: Shanmugam Murugappan (@ 208.236.83.6) on: Thu Dec 17 18:34:00 EST 1998
IMO, It is totally unfair to bash IR. He is a senior MD and he has proved that he is a 'born' genius long time back and bashing him means bashing music itself ('isai alias IR' - Courtesy : Actor Paarthiban) and some people unnecessarily bash one MD to praise their favourite MD. But bashing definitely brings out the strenghts and weaknesses of a MD and it provides some fun in the DF. But bashing is only for newcomers and not for established MDs like music, sorry, IR.
- From: BOth ARR and IR are good for me (@ sdn-ar-001mnminnp020.dialsprint.net) on: Thu Dec 17 19:38:30 EST 1998
First of all i am a fan of tamil music even though
i am not from TN.Hence i like good tamil music
irrespective of the MD
anybody who compares IR with ARR have a distorted sense of music , history ,class ,.....
IR has consistently, thatz the key word, given good music for over 20 years.(think i am a bit short there)
Where as ARR, who started in 1991 ,is beginning to sound jaded and has given lacklustre music for a lot of films ( eg his latest hindi film Doli saja ke Rakhna)even though he does only a few films in a year.Let us give him some time and see whether he has the lasting power as IR
As they say in cricket FORM is temporary and CLASS is permanent.
