IR's new albums!

  Using Dolby and DTS means mixing needs to be done for both versions. This is done so as to satisfy theatres which may have only one of them. You can see Hollywood movies playing in theatres with different sound systems. The studio provides various kinds of prints.
  
  Re: live on set recording - it is back in fashion with the advent of higgly directional microphones. This means it picks up only the voice from the actor at which the mic is aimed. (This is also used for spying !! )This takes care of lip synch issues with dubbing.

  neels, ravi is right. Technologies like dubbing and even play back singing were not available in those days. So, Hey!Ram is not the first such effort, per se. But you can say that, it is the first such effort in the modern indian film industry.

  The rigorous analysis of Raja's music reminds one of a story :
  
  A man had a poultry farm. The poultry inspector came over once and asked the man about the feeding of the birds. The inspector told him, on hearing the answer, that there were deficiencies in the feed and fined him and asked him to include some other items.
  
  Six months later another inspector came over and the story was repeated.
  
  The man was really fed up. So when an inspector came for the third time and asked him about the food, he said, "I do not feed them anything. I give each of them 10 bucks and they buy and eat whatever they want".
  
  Maybe Raja will decide that he will give each one of us one instrument and ask us to compose our own music - in IR's style :-).

  What a great album....!Everywhere is Hey Ram,Kannukul Nillavu,Sethu,Time and Thirunelvelli.Raja you are really super guy.You is the one and only musical maestro in this world.We can't compare him with anybody.Raja is god of music.There is no world's to describe IR music.Really diffrent.I'm don't see a more great MD just like him.Good Luck Raja............!You are also the best for last Millenium and for this Millenium.

  Songs should not matter in a movie like this. Imagine a movie like Gandhi banking on songs. Similarly, I dont think Kamal is banking on the songs. I am sure he is targeting the Oscars, in that case the BGM will matter more.

  Well just one song (which even the "southies" here have agreed is below average) will not decide the fate of the album.... I think the other songs and good marketing will help the album succeed

  The song "kaanakarunkuyile" from Sethu has a couple of novelties, I think.
  
  Being a folk song, IR obviously sets the pallavi in Harikhambhoji (A Major?). But, halfway through the 1st interlude, the flute changes the scale to Natabhairavi. Now, IR has frequently used a diminished sixth to suggest a certain wistfulness in such tunes but I can't recollect IR having done this before. The antara
  continues in Natabhairavi. Its lines, centred as they are on pa sa and ga, are wonderfully consonant.
  
  The other interesting aspect is the singing. Kovai Kamala's straight-up rendition of Ponnadiyan's rather farcical lyrics is a delight!
  The scale of the antara, and indeed the singing, evokes K.B. Sundarambal.
  Who is this lady? Wish to hear more from her in the future.

  Hari.,
  Kovai Kamala is a stage singer - Very popular for bringing KBS's voice to stages. ;-) She has done some carnatic music concerts also. Once MS Subbulaxmi mentioned that 'KBS carnatic music paadinaa ippadithaan irukkum-nnu ninaikkiReen' after listening to one of her Katcheris.
  
  She has sung some numbers in movies also. Recent example being the 'Gnaanap pazaththaip pizinthu' bit from 'Vaaraayoo thoozhi' (Jeans). Other than this Sethu Number., In IR's music, I can remember only one song sung by her - New year song from Poonthoottam. But in A V Ramanan's saptha swarangaL(SUNTV) program., she told she has sung lot of songs for IR. May be other DFers can give more details.

  I have been waiting for Hey ram's release. I live in the US..and am traveling all the time. hard to find time to find out if the CDs are out in the local stores. Can anyone confirm that the music is actually available here in the US..? (I am in Detroit).
  Also, if anyone of you could tell me where I can get a hang of these songs in the Internet...!!
