From late ninities till now, there has never been a singer who has established him/herselfs, like our gems did, none of them have a perfect tamil accent, most of them can not sing at all, NONE of them are versatile, NONE of them have a good voice, except, Sujatha, Anuradha Sriram, Reena & Karthick, we have songs with silliest lyrics like "Apple penNe neyaroo, ice cream, blah blah", then we have "strawberry kanNe", where are we going from here, from bad to worse??

Neethipathi, everyone will have their own likes and dislikes. But I'm wondering if anyone would dislike SPB. Man, he is a miraculous singer.

"Talking" about music and "complaining" about the "good old days" are two different things. :)
As for Dr. Bala Muralikrishna and SP Bala, I have the greatest respect for SP Bala, but let us agree to disagree.

SPB and KJY are the best singers TFM has ever seen.
Nobody comes even remotely close to them. Even now.
I wonder if there would be any singers to sing the song "Ennadi Meenakshi".. i don't think SPB's son won't be able to sing. Mano tried to imitate SPB.
His voice would always be falling apart whenever he goes high pitch. I don't think anybody can imitate KJY. Bala Murali Krishna may not have sung many film songs. Chinna Kannan Azaikkiran and Mounathil Vilayadum songs are great songs. UK , UM and HH sing all the songs pretty much the same way. Sometimes they sound like losers'. Other day i listened to the song "Kannukkum Kannukkum" from Ninaikka Therindha Maname. KJY is superb. UK fans don't be offended for following words. Sometimes i feel they can't even sing like Kamal. Exam. Then pandi cheemaiyile, Pon Maane Theduthe, Gayiru Oli Mazhaiyil.. etc. ccould not have been sung by them better than Kamal.

SPB, KJY, Mano are all still available for singing. Same with a few new/young singers too. Should we blame the MDs for not using them. I heared that the audio rights are sold for much lesser if the songs are sung by SPB or KJY. This is one reason I thing even IR is being forced to use new singers.

Some of the SPB numbers for ARR were something classy.
1. Anjai Anjali - Duet
2. Thoda Thoda Malarnthathenna - Indira
3. Kaathalennum Thervezhuthi - Kaathalar Thinam
4. Kaathal Rojaave - Roja
and one very different one is
Maanoothu Manthayila - Kizhakku Chemmaiyile

The greatest thing about SPB is his versatlity. He can come with both the pathos and the jolly happy numbers with flying colours. He is someone like Kishore Kumar for his versatility.

One of my all-time favourites (though ARR) is Velli Malare song from Jodi. Who else other than SPB can sing a song like that.

>>. Unless we live a simple life meeting basic needs and be content with ourselves, these problems would not cease to exist. <<
Could be the reason!, how sad :((
maverick & venki;
u have forgotten one damn good ARR+SPB combo, the song from "Ashokan", a mohan lal & Madhubala starrer, in this songs SPB sings in two different voices, superb!
I saw SPB interviewing IR on TV programm called "Raagalayam", they were both very friendly, they were damn good friends, they were on the "vaada" "Pooda" basis!, SPB goes to IR "dai unudaiya favourite singer yarru", then IR was laughing like hell, u know who it is, so don't even bother!
so it could be the producers who have demolished SPB+IR combo!

SPB ruled TFM for a decade, is there any singers amongst the new clowns who can match SPB?
I don't think so!!!!!

Again a query for the likes of Sivaselvam and x:
There was a mid 80's film wherein all the songs were southern indian classical in strain. Who else but SP Subraamaniam had been called upon for the vocal performances.
The outline of this movie is very vague and unclear in my mind. I had seen only a part of the movie. The movie was set in monastic, theocratic surroundings. The only part that I could see was that the blind, bearded religious, monastic young man lives in a temple along with a homeless young woman who also resides in the same temple.
Once some rowdies and local drug-addicts attack the woman and try to rape her. The blind man hearing the shrieks, comes to rescue her, but is able to hit only the victim as he excitedly swings his long baton. The incident is followed up by an indignantly tragic song.
Can anyone indentify the songs and the movie?

Outsider- I think you are referring to 'Kadhal Oviyam'-1982. Stg: Radha and Kannan. Directed by Bharathiraja. Music: Illayaraja. Lyrics by Panju Arunachalam and Vairamuthu.
Great songs like:
Naadham en jeevane-SJ
Nadhiyilaadum poovanam-SPB-SJ-TKS Kalaivanan-Deepan C
Kuyile kuyile-SPB-SJ
Velli Chalangaigal-SPB
Poovil vandu-SPB
Poojaikkaaga vaazhum-Deepan C
Sangeetha jaathi mullai- SPB
SJ and Deepan C bagged the TN Govt. Awards for 'Naadham en jeevaney' and
Poojaikkaaga vaazhum poovai', respectively.

some trivia about kadhal oviyam songs-
the funny thing is,DC was the track singer for poojaikkaga-he sang ths song so well,SP on hearing the tack version said keep the track version itself for the film-and it was the only non sp song in that film.
SJ-she was not happy with the lines-enadhu sadhangai vidhavai aagi pogume-VM convinced her to sing.
SPB apparently cried after the recording of sanggedha jadhi millai.
and last, all the songs were composed and recorded in 2 days!

Friends,
Some more trivia! In 'Kaadhal Oviyam',in 'Poojaikkaaga vaadum poovai...', VM has written 'iLam kaaRRai thaangaatha poovin jaathi, idi veezhnthu sarugaathal thaanO needhi?'. Some fans asked him " oru poo veiyilil kaaynthaal athu sarugu aagum! Athan meethu idi veezhnthaal adhu karugi saambalaaga allavaa aagum? ". VM generously agreed " uNmaithaan! uNarchchi vEgaththil vanthu vizhuntha vaarththaigaL! vittu vidungaL!". He himself narrated this on Sun TV on Tamil New Year's day 1998!

Raghu
I have made a whole CD with the original and the cover of the same song by SPB.. for all teh songs that SPB covered
Re: Oru Nall Podhuma. Ive listened to the 2 versions a thousand times as a critic.. I agree with you SPB's cover is defnitely better than the original..more so on a high end audio system. I think mainly because SPB's voice had a lot more strength and depth. He also seemed to get all the minute intricacies of the song perfect. i am not comparing the 2 singers..Just commenting on that particlar song..
Re; Pavadai Thavaniyil: I kinda disagree with you. SPB's version is slighly more easier on the ear.
SPB could have chosen a better female singer..for the songs...Boy! she was hard on the ears.
Rasaathi Onnai: No contest. SPB's version was better. But he did do the song at a lower pitch than the original version
Kaalayum Neeyae, Sollathan Ninaikiraen, Poongatru Thirumbuma: spoiled totally by the female voice.
Nilavae ennidam; I have heard the original ages ago. i cant get the orginal now to compare.
Kannae Kalaimane is a tie

Is there any share of Satyam, the Telugoo, Kannada music director, in Tamil music?
