it's indeed hard to believe that Raja is in financial crisis. bad investments? may be. isn't the 'paavalar creations' banner owned by him? ( the one that produced karagaattakaaran i think). but then, do we know if the later movies did well in the box office? can someone clarify? i believe this is one possibility that could've wiped his savings.
again, the answer lies in the above paragraph itself! let him produce a movie with mind-blowing music, i think he can manage some of the apparent difficulties he's in currently. i know, producing means more loans! but, a musical hit means more assignments for him. sounds very abstract. but, i believe it's easier to reach our own brethern in TN, than it is to reach world audience.

Hi,
Iraivan, IRai sodhikkiraar endru thondrugiradhu. Isaikkadalukku financial crisisa? Even now, if IR wishes, he can become a billionaire in no time by accepting all movies that comes to him and still he will come up with mega hits. But, I think, even in this financial crisis, he is opting to do music only for selective movies and do justice to his job. His words,
"On no day I have thought about me as a Guru. Music is gods property and anybody can use it. What am I to tell ?? "
,proves what a modest person he is. Indha maadhiri oru musical geniusukku ippadi sodhanai varuvadhu varutham tharakkoodiya vishayam. Summaava sonnaanga - nallavangaLathan Aandavan adhigam sodhippaan appadinnu. I sincerely wish that IR comes out of this financial crisis. Ellam valla Iraivan, ILayaraajavirku neenda aayuLayum kurai illaadha vaazhkayayum tharumbadi praarthikkiraen.

How can the fans help IR tide over the financial crisis. By giving him really open support. How to make this happen is the question.

IR himself helped many a person of yesteryears to tide out of the financial crisis - I'm refering to none other than the greatest-next-to-IR composer, MSV. Having lost all his money by the wayward children, he was well supported by IR - not just by teaming up for one or two movies, but by giving opportunities in his own movies (I saw on TV, MSV running as the lead orchestrator for `Andhiyile' song from Chinnavar)
IR had/has a big heart and hopefully will be blessed for that!

Disheartening!
It is encouraging to see such touching responses from fans, however.
THere is litle for me to add. But even as I write this , quite coincidentally , I am hearing this song from vazhkkai.
"Maname nee thudikkathe,
Vizhiye nee nanaiyaadhe,
Vaazhkkai paadhaiyil medu pallangal Varalaam
Adhanaal vazhve maari poguma?
...
Illaamal ponale ezhaiyum anaale
sandhega nizhal kooda pagaiyaagume
Than kaiye vazhvile thakka thunaiyagume.
Irul ponaal oliyaagum..marame
pazhuthaal paravaigal kilayil paadume..
..... "
Hope he has such strength to tide oout of the crises.
Too bad his progeny is not smart enough to either cash in on his stature or relieve him of financial worries like Prabhu did for Sivaji

A good news is that IR has been awarded the Lata Mangeshkar award for this year by the MadhyaPradesh Government. The interview published in Vikatan has been recorded just before he left for INDORE to recieve the award

Hi,
SURE, this is a very nice plan, if we can make it
work. In fact, there are hundreds of thousand's of
fans in Canada as well. That is a nice plan. Please go ahead and do whatever need to be done.

Hai IRfan,
I am just a student who has a naive 8 month experience of US. May be elders like Udhaya must take the initiative. I feel we can collect money from the sponsors and plan this. If somebody is willing to take this big responsibility, I assure I shall contribute to it like a squirrel. what do others say ?

Murali,
Elder-aa? Ayyoo. You're showing undue faith in my capabilities. Thanks, but let's get real here. I'm a lone ranger, guys, I don't have the contacts, network or organization to pull off anything in this magnitude.
I have some ideas where we can get started with this:
-get a powerful Thamizh sangam in one of the major cities--Chicago, NY, etc. involved. These sangams have the manpower, organizational skills to mount a big concert or live recording or some such thing.
-get someone with TF industry contacts to devise a compilation of BGM scores, some mulitmedia mogul like Pyramid audio could issue this (or at least help us produce it for a decent sum) as a special benefit to resurrect a musical giant.
I would think these are somewhat feasible, we can provide financial backing, but need someone to tie up these deals. Any more suggestions are of course welcome and needed to bring this effort to fruition. Hey, let's go to the "We can together sponsor..." thread to discuss this issue in the future, huh, this way we have one thread dedicated to this.

Friends:
I am giving Geetha's,Muralishankar's, Udhaya's and Kaushik's wishlist a deep thought. I have some basic start off plans. This year, after a few more exams, hopefully finish by April, I am all set to contact/write the following people with excellent music samples:
1. Zubin Mehta
2. David Barnheboim of Chicago Symphony
3. Mira Nair operating from New York
4. Amitabh Bachchan (regarding releasing Miss World cassette, to say the least here)
5. IR or KR himself
then,
+ Pass out some prerecorded selections at successful Indian restaurants in Chicago. Requesting them to log responses and questions asked.
+ I have heard about 2 or 3 famous musicologists who have compiled various forms of world music to comment on this one.
+ I am also writing to Francois Gautier, a famous Indophile (believes that Indians are the ones who were the Aryans themselves and went westwards!). Please read his 'interview' in the Rediff web page of a week back.
+I am also hoping that I can find time and some money to get on the air in Chicago. There is a radio station that sells time. However, the targeted audience will be South Indians, with a cross-share to the general listeners. A good tool to obtain feedback.
+ Design a fascinating web site with all possible details of IR (I hope by then we have a 100 other web sites already on IR, each competing in terms of quality of presentation and news items.)
The whole idea is to send this feedback to IR himself or KR before the end of this year; so that they can have the motivation to gear up to rework their compositions for different audiences around the world.
This much, I feel, will give some mileage and notice for everyone else in this forum to forge ahead in their small ways. Indians have to start sharing things and no better enthusiasts than IR fans to do it in style and show that Indians can also promote stuff on a world scale. We don't need any SONY, BONY or CONY. We just need IR to be shared by his everloving fans.
Believe it or not, guys, I have just convinced a friend in London to write her thesis like Anuradha Sriram has done on South Indian music, with emphasis on Raja's works. So, go ahead and identify any such friends around doing Ph.D. in Music.
What do you say, Friends?

This is the greatest piece of initiative Nithin.
My suggestion is that before you write the letter to all these greats, you may put a copy of this letter on the df so that every dfer copies, signs and sends it to the concerned. By this way , I hope they shall come to know of the support IR enjoys. In fact we can ask some of our friends to sign up too. The letters must have a common base - the DF - for receiving replies (else the senders may scorn at the very thought of replying to the scores of letters they may receive ). If Ravi/ Ramki/ RR , feel that they can help by allowing to utilize the forum this way, I feel it shall definitely work. Is is worth giving a thought ?

Murali:
Thanks much for the encouragement. I was also thinking on the same lines as you did. I would be interested in having as many fans sign a card from various cities in the US and other countries. However, I am not sure, if the letters I am writing is suitable for this addendum.
From a single fan's viewpoint there are things easier and emotional to write about. I would not have problems related to condescension, copywright, selling off and that without authority, principal agent aspect of misrepresenting the principal and so on. In additin,if I wrote on behalf of a huge fan base, it might not make sense to say, Zubin Mehta, for example. He might wonder, is there an emergency or what? I am just assuming, you know... it need not be true...seeing the bad light first...
Right now, I am preparing a few cassettes to give out to a few restaurants. I want to request them to replace the current dismal trash they play along with the garbage they serve! Objective? Well, a concert in USA? What kind of marketing should be planned so that IR gets the maximum audience, makes the maximum profit, and can continue with his work without worrying about his studio financing, etc..
I will definitely tell you the results. Based on initial 'feedback' from Zubin Mehta, for example, only can we see what options are better carried out immediately.
I am taking these objectives rather seriously, let me see, what comes out of it. Somehow, I feel that beyond South India, we won't have a matured audience to discover much of IR's music.
Music today is sought for expressiveness of the body. Not of the mind, or of the heart or of the soul. Audience is decadent, in some ways and musically less aware. If I came up with a suitable name for our project, such as I RAP, it might catch on, even though what I meant to say is Ilayaraja Awareness Project! We need to see more spirituality, more humility everywhere.
Anyway, what the heck. Let us go for it.
