I dont know abt all this team work business. Of course, the sound output is team work - One man cant play all instruments and sing etc... But the ideas behind... Thats a one-man show. IR is one of the few composers in the whole world who does every single bit of his songs by himself (probably not all songs, but most) This has been mentioned time and again by SPB, Hari Prasad Chaurasia etc. In fact, he evn tells the singers abt nuances and gamakams and really taxes them. There really is no question of IR asking his flute player for suggestions. He writes the music, and the instrumentalists just play it as he wants to... No question of improvisation. So no creative credit needs to be given to any of the musicians in his troupe. ( Of course I am not suggesting that they are not talented or anything, just in IR compositions, their creative input is really minimal if not zero, because thats the way IR works - unlike the case of every other MD in India, ever!)(Source: One of his guitarists, who is my friend's guru)

In fact, IR compromises(makes simple) in many situations where the people in his orchestra can't play some of the tricky tunes he has created. Even the last guitar piece in the song "Ilaya Nila Pozhigiradhu" was an abridged version for the same reason. Somebody had posted in this forum that it was played by IR himself, No, it was not played by IR.

Well there was a lot of fury about Arunmozhi singing in IR's albums. In my opinion, Arunmzohi is way ahead of singers like Udit Narayan, Sukwinder Singh and other singers who do nothing but Tamizh-kolai, that makes hardcore Tamil fans put their heads down in disgrace.
Incidentally Arunmozhi's first song (that was released) was "Naan enbadhu nee allavo" in Soora Samharam. Please listen to that song before you comment about him.
And, do remember that he is only a part-time singer and not a full-fledged one. He wasthe flute player in IRs orchestra and used to explain tunes to the singers when they came to sing. It is when IR identified that Arunmozhi has a potential voice that he started singing on a part-time basis.

sorry, you had not mentioned media but the previous mails... in your mail - you talked about other talented people - I beg to differ on that point too please.
On another dimension, 'Thaguthi ullavarin Garvam kooda oru azhagu thaan' ... IMHO.

ARR gives credit to his instrument players and sound engineers on the cassette covers of his new albums...because as I had mentioned before...music these days is more of sound effects and synthesizing (which doesn't necessarily mean digital but creation of a new sound)...IR's work style is "one man thinks all"...ARR is more modern..."many contribute to one"...there is nothing wrong with this as it is only a process in the evolution of music along with technology...

Maybe that's why (IMO) IR's creations feel so jampacked without any breathing space...he has to loosen up a bit and get into the jazz mode where music creation is a team-play...this can provide more innovative creations...IR can then edit and apply his genius...as he did with Hariprasad Chaurasia's flute pieces...I heard that HC almost fell at IR's feet with tears in his eyes after hearing IR's arrangements of his flute-pieces..he didn't expect such a superb creation...this is what precisely ARR is doing now....new instrumntalists, voices, choruses from different styles which altogether give a very new creation..

ARR has a jazz background maybe that's why he is good at this team play...

Sabesan:
The Hindu points out rerecording is so wonderful.
Hindu:
Music that includes the
re-recording is a high point of ``Friends''. Melody, rhythm, emotion, action, Ilaiyaraja's music provides them all. Vijay Yesudas is a welcome new voice. If ``Vaanam Perisudhaan'' is a foot- tapping number, ``Manjal Poosum'' and ``Thendral Varum'' are enjoyable exercises in melody.
Kumudham
Muthu ramalingam writes rerecording, paadalgal ethuvum theravillai.
Chennaionline says:
Ilayaraja does a different music for malayalam producers.

Not only in movie reviews, kumudam is a trendsetter in various aspects. Their 'nakkal' is highly enjoyable, especially in movie reviews. Review of 'vaancjinaathan' is a recent example. Look at who wrote that review :-))))
But as far as music is concerned, they don't seem to have good taste/knowledge. From the top of my mind, I can recollect 2 movies:
1. kodi parakkuthu - They said all songs are useless. But 'sElai kattum', 'kaadhal ennai' and 'annai madiyil' are very good songs.
2. poonthOttak kAvalkAran - They said that only 'pArAmal pArtha' is good. Rest is trash. They were not impressed with 'sinthiya veNmaNi' and 'pAdAtha themmAngu'
There were various other movies also, but I don't remember those now.
So, this review is nothing new.

Kumudham Muthulingan is an idiot, he doesn't know anything about music. Except Kumudham all the magazines are praising the music. Kumudham should stop him writing any movie reviews.

Music is not meant for so-called geniuses alone. It is also meant for people like Muthulingam whom you have called an idiot. Mind your words. See the film once again and listen to the music done for other movies by contemporary music directors and then speak. All these days when kumdham gave a positive report it was a reflection of genius and now it becomes an idiot. Is it! Look at your back before pointing out another mans dirty back!
Beyond everything, times are changing and people want something fresh and new. When you are not in a position to cope up - just retire and relax! Or produce own movies with situations for music scope of your taste and prove. Dont bother about the other mans intelligence.

Ayyo Paavam.
UV, subbiah and how many more to vouch for the nice qualities of IR as personal friends. Have you ever seen his Doordharshan interview of IR with H.Ramakrishnan. IRs reply were reflection of his behaviour. It was the same DD interview show which showed his entry into studio with his assistant ringing the bell announcing his entry.
It is understandable that IRs personal friends and close related promoters are running this forum show! Well done! But do take the genuine opinions in the right sense too, when quoted with reference. What if he had Briyani with you, it doesnt matter! What he replies for the public in the media is what really matters.
Nobody is against Arulmozhi. Infact one feels sorry for his current state, for his services can be used in better places still. There is no second opinion that Arulmozhi, SPB, Mano - all IR favourites sound alike and there is no variety! That was the only point for discussion.
