Indian in America!? Bharath, in case you have the article could you also forward it to me?
But there's another online source for getting absolutely hilarious write-ups on Indians in America - moreso from the tamil brahmin in US perspective. Ramesh Mahadevan is the writer!
You can find his articles (quite a lot!) here...
http://www.aunet.org/ramesh/
I suggest you print out all the write-ups and read it in leisure, they are way too funny to be read on a PC screen in the office! I got them bound!

Hey guys..I did not expect this song to be in the album. After all, Indians are not a big percentage of the target audience. Will the Indian masses pay $14 or more for a CD ?
Anyways, MJ is no big deal. Yeah..yeah he is the king of POP..To me whatever he did are mostly on the presentation side of things ...musically our IR, MSV and older stalwarts are far, far ahead. Our lyrics are fantastic (used to be :() and the music soul stirring. Yeah MJ said..look at yourself in the mirror and make a change..but listen to similar songs in our country..achcham enbathu madamaiyada anjAmai dhravidar udamaiyada !! ARR has better scale of references right here in our country than be recognised by a POP musician from a different culture.

When there is a chance of ARR getting into MJ's album, ARR is great., MJ is using ARR to sell his album in India etc.,
when not included, its all marketing strategy, MJ is gone case etc., hmm great going.

kiru,
the point of ARR working with MJ is being discussed as a justification for ARR being a composer or sort of an exam that ARR needs to pass to prove himself. why is that so?
I dont want to become comparitive and rope in IR and MSV here? but should'nt an Indian work with a top star in US of A.
Would'nt atleast 6-10 americans for every 100(or 1000) who listen to MJ be interested in who ARR is. In this evolving world wudnt familiarity with Indian culture help us. Wudnt India also see a counterpart of ang lee or john woo emerging in holly wood? why do people see it as "why does it have to happen?" rather than take it as "whats wrong if it happens?"
IR/MSV never tried to work with MJ so why does ARR working with MJ a failiure to them?
Isnt it also a fact that MJ caters to a different audience and he has been doing it on the road since he was 9 years old to 42 years till now? his range and experience in music industry is rarely surpassed by music industries in the world.
Specifically to a south indian like u and me IR/MSV and ARR might have some appeal. BUt to thrill a common from detrit LA paris, munich, lahore, madras ,tokyo and moscow dont u think there needs to be something special. How many people can manage that feat in a culturally closed society like russia or even germany!
MJ's Bad was the largest selling album in India until it was broken by dangerous to be broken by Khaled . For some of u sales may mean nothing. But doesnt it mean something....an era where we had no MTV to view presentation. my point is indians and most of the world do see content and not just presentation.
A little bit of fair comparison is all I ask.
all in my humble opinion...
I still maintain 2 things Mj doesnt need ARR to sel his tuff in india
ARR doesnt need MJ to prove himself in India. so for that matter any one else

- well , does an indian hear music based on the cost!...i dont think so...majority see quality rather than quantity and price. Last 2 lines in
bharath posting makes lots of sense.

Bharath, That was my point exactly. MJ doesnt need ARR to sell his stuff. But is ARR trying to reach world thru MJ? Is this a mere assumption or a fact which we dont know. What I feel was he got an oppurtinity to work with MJ and he worked thats the end of story.
Sorry for the following which is a digression to this thread:
I always used to wonder, why in India all other music cultures are embraced where as the other way never happened. Indian music was never accepted in any other country like we accept their music.
Stars like MJ, Madonna,Samanta Fox etc are always welcome in India and have lot of craze. They have more following and craze than any movie singers or infact singers in India. When MJ came to give a concert in Mumbai, you see people going mad and doing what not to listen him, get the ticket etc.,
Albums like Didi which many people cant even understand what the guy is singing, was a tremendous hit. Many south Indians dont even understand what Daler Mehndi is singing but his albums are everywhere in South India. But how many albums of south India are sold outside the place? There are lot of examples like this which never ends.
When we are able to listen and enjoy all the forms of music, why other people cannot? Why our form of music is not reaching everywhere? Where is the problem? Is there something missing? I dont know. Can any body analyze this? Like many of our musicians are influenced by western, pop, ragge, jazz, why cant somebody influenced by Hindustani or carnatic?

NCR,
i bounced of the very same questions to some carnautic music experts I know and their answer was a simple...
"carnautic music teaches us a lot of tolerance to accept wide variety of music"
so the undelying logic is , we, having listened to carnautic based songs for most of our (initial)life are said to have covered the super set of music and hence can accept all the subsets (namely foreign)
But others allegedly have a narrow(read as specialized) view of music and hence are unable to appreaciate ours.
in a recent conversation with a "hindi" friend. i happened to mention as to how a sane person could not like "mere sare subuhon me..tu hi tu" from kabhi na kabhi..he said the carnautic touch in that song violated his hindustani sense of music and hence sounded discordant( or somewhat like that)...
this is just a voicing of the answers i have collected so far. i leave it to our experts to judge if this is true or not....

Bharath, I am actually on your side :) MJ dropping ARR's song should not mean anything. It is not a commentary/feedback/criticism of ARRs music. Thats my point.

KB has given a fairly big interview for the latest Kumudam. The only Rahman related question...
Q: Isnt it true that PP has been delayed because of Rahman?
A: I went to Rahman knowing well that he takes more time in composing than other composers. He is a genius (yes, he has said this exactly this way!!). The way he works on his compositions meticulously is like what they say 'to hit the bulls eye'...Even if he takes his own time, I'm not going to pester him for the output every now and then.

Golden Moments . . . .
I know A.R. Rahman for 18 years, to be precise, even as A.S. Dilipkumar in his early teens. I was just out of college then and was trying my hand in violin, guitar, keyboard etc. on small light music programs. I would do my own programs too once in a while.
It was then, I met Dilip and in fact, I used to hire a lot of equipments for all my shows from him. Some of the shows that I could afford, I would request Dilip to play Keyboard(s) for my shows.
Earlier, I had seen Dilip performing at least 4 or 5 keyboards at a time on the stage in the Soviet Cultural Auditorium (right behind the Chola Hotel then) every once in a while. Being among Audience one can't even really see the face of the 'kid', surrounded by 4 or 5 huge Key Boards, but only listen and enjoy the flow of music rendered by the tender fingers. He would be the only one on the stage - 'One kid Orchestra' - performing the complete song all by himself playing on all keyboards. Amazing! I would be impressed every time, and right after the show, even go up the stage to shake hands with this 'kid', help him out pack & carry the keyboards and amps to the auto.
I used to perform on the same stage after or before Dilip's show and it was one of those days that this 'kid' was impressed by my performance. It's hard to believe, yet it's true! I still remember that. It was a 'solo' on the Guitar - the song 'Unakkenna Meley Ninrai.oh Nandalala.' from the film Simla Special. Right after the show, Dilip came up to me and appreciated my playing. He also asked me if I could join him and his troupe for a big show in Music Academy that year. I was all excited, but quite nervous too. Honestly, I knew only very basics of playing Guitar and was comfortable with only one song and that was Unakkenna....
After a long and hard day of office work at Chromepet, I would meet Dilip at his house (near Habibullah Road in T.Nagar) in the evening and rehearse with him for a few hours everyday for the show. The big event was approaching..... It was on the June 4th....at the Music Academy......
What was the show?
What's important on that day?
How did the show go?
Did I manage to be....o.k.. inspite of being very nervous all along?.....
Later on,
Yours,
"New York"-Raja
Golden Moments - 2
Well, the big day was the June 4th, A grand Light Music show by the band ‘ARISTOCRATS’ by AS Dilipkumar. June 4th is the Birthday of Sri. S.P. Balasubramanium. The show was a ‘great success’.
Show was organized by ‘Kala Saagar’….a telugu association…..in appreciation of one of the greatest singers……Sri. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and it was organized in such a way to co-ordinate with the Birth day of the great singer ‘SPB’. Isn’t that wonderful? Prior to the show, we’ve had a quite a few rehearsals at Dilip’s house and were quite comfortable with all the songs. Like I said before, it’s a completely a ‘One Man Show’ and ‘Dilip’ is the big guy! There wasn’t much that we are doing because, Dilip will cover all the work that we two guys were doing with the guitars. I guess ‘Dilip’ wanted me because of 2 reasons.
1. He liked my playing.
2. I was good playing the ‘lead guitar’ and we all looked like a group of ‘teenagers’!
The entire stage was with only 4 of us.
1. Dilip with about 5 key boards (as usual all surrounded by him)
2. Kumar on the Drums
3. Gururaja Rao (that’s me) on the Lead Guitar &
4. Vijaya kumar (Viji) on the Bass Guitar.
Just to mention here about Kumar, the drummer. He is one of the sons of ‘Tabla’ Prasad, the Veteran Tablist from MS Viswanathan’s group. He is also one of my best friends then.
A complete non-stop Instrumental show for about 3 hours. We were all appreciated by the organizers of ‘Kala Saagar’ & Baluji came up the stage and appreciated all of us, took photos with all of us. It was a wonderful moment, especially for me because, that was the first time, I was a part of a big show, in a big auditorium and of course in honor of my favorite singer Sri. SPB.
Well, that show being a great success, me and Dilip have become good friends.
More to come: My shows with Dilip, my recordings etc……..
