Excerpt from interview with Mahalaxmi Iyer (rediff)

"I was a shade apprehensive about doing a typically Carnatic classical song when called by Rajaji (Ilayaraja) for the first time, but then things fell into place"
Which song is she referring to, any idea?

Karthik,
She has sung Meetadha Oru Veenai (Poonthottam) with Hariharan. I think she refers to that only.

UVII/kiru: ramiy, afaik, sells pirated copies. also, i am not sure if the tamil VCDs are original either. it's better to keep away from these parasites/pirates.

aruLaracan,
I remember reading somewhere that ramiy owns the rights for international distribution for some IR movie. Maybe they do indulge in piracy as well. UVII thanks for warning me.
Balaji, I dont understand your question. I have a crappy headphone at work, a good one at home and a good stereo system as well. The headphone at work is for 'background listening'. But even with this I can tell this album has good recording. It is the mixing that is not good.

I don't think Ramey pirates anything.
But, most of Ramey's CDs are pirated by others such as Jeya Brothers in Toronro.
Ramey has been constatntly avertising to customers in Toronto to make sure that they are buying original Ramey CDs and not the pirated ones.
The pirated ones also have the Ramey label, but apparently do not have the correct serial number.
Every time Ramey releases an album, they print ads in Toronto news papers stating which serial numbers to look for and which stores to buy them from.

Kiru,
"IR's use of modern beats for a sad/melancholic song. IR is either ridiculing the modern MDs or throwing a challenge to them or he is just plain annoyed"
Good positive insight!Have you read a lot of Norman Vincent Peale?Just curious!!!
I think Balaji's concern is non-recording oriented if I'm right.

Sad songs almost became non-existent in Tamil block-busters after Shankar introduced the trend in "Gentleman". He had understood the audience well.
So these days good Directors and MDs don't just look for a pathos song...they pad it up well with either excellent camera-work, instrumentation or vocals to give the audience a fresh perspective and not get bored with the song itself.

fliflo,
I think cosmician has a point there. After Rahman's entry, sad songs are rare to find and almost nonexistent from all the composers except raja. All the songs are based only one (jolly) mood. Culture of tuning to situations became history which is bad and might be reason for the lack of variety. Hope the situation changes..

To add up further number of Pathos songs from 100% level during MSV period came down to 20% during IR period now it has come down to 2% due to public taste...
Generally in sad songs people appreciate mostly the Lyrics content and Lyricist walks away with Honours...Younger generation MD's are quite Egoistic and do not want the Lyricist to get all praises...That may be the reason they avoid Sad numbers....Harris in Minnale has tuned a nice sad Number Venmathi Venmathiye Nillu...

That's all I can think of right now:-)). I think it's more the fact that tamil directors are mostly of Deva origin that we face this situation of comedy+sentiment films coming out in abundance.

What is Shankar's role here? What trend did he introduce?

ARR did tune songs for a variety of situations/audiences. This is what differentiates him from the rest of the pop artistes/bands which sprung up in the early 80s.
Coming back to the topic, yes UVII, chandri song is fantastic. Of the two interludes, the first one takes the cake. Fantastic String sections, backed with folkish humming and rhythm. Also, I would have preferred somebody else other than KJY. He is getting old. But he sings it well, especially traversing to the higher octaves.
Like Swami says, we can see traces of old/80s IR in this album. He has made lots of changes in the way the strings are used (eg. when KJY sings chandri....) I think.

BTW, I think the Chitra is basically a rock song !! Only IR can give this sense of softness to a rock song..Energetic singing by Chitra..
We have been missing SPB and Chitra in TFM a lot, I would say !!

doubter...
Shankar was the first to break the trend and completely do away with a pathos song...bcos he understood that at that time pathos songs were turning off the audiences...I remember watching "I love India" and the pathos number had many people walking out...and the song actually seemed to be unnecessary there...Shankar was the assistant of Pavithran and maybe picked up the feelings of the audience and did away with a pathos number in his first film...and for some time this was taken for granted to just have jolly songs in films...unless as I'd mentioned earlier....
"So these days good Directors and MDs don't just look for a pathos song...they pad it up well with either excellent camera-work, instrumentation or vocals to give the audience a fresh perspective and not get bored with the song itself."

Thanks for the list....some of my most favourite numbers are there :-)
But I only wish that you had not overlooked my earlier query about "Usire" song which is in the Old responses and given me a proper answer...I felt that you all had just ignored it...this is an open-minded discussion forum isn't it ?
