From MSV to IR; From IR to ARR...

Isn't funny that we are in the same transition state like the those people who felt it the 70's. Yes, MSV was a great musician at the that time and even now his compositions are good melodies staying as ever green for us to hear. But he was replaced by IR in the mid 70's and people who grew up listening to MSV never accept that IR's songs are good and different(like for e.g. our parents). We all know that IR is one of the greatest musician India has ever given. But I am seeing the same kind of transition happening in TFM page with bunch of people who support IR strongly not able to accept ARR as the new generation musician. Comparisons of IR with ARR or anybody for that matter can never give as an answer or rather it will lead us to argument for ever and ever… It is the law of nature that what ever goes up at one time should come down, like wise MSV had his peak, IR too, now ARR is climbing that peak and I am sure he will be replaced by somebody when crowd needs that change. To appreciate the best ones the world titles celebrities of yesterday as LEGENDS, celebrities of today as STARS, and keeps waiting for celebrities of tomorrow…

Can we ever understand this? or just we are so scared of changes?

  Nan enna sollarane na, MSV avar kallathulla great, IR avar kallathula great , ARR eppa great. So, is you think somebody is great it is very much revelant to 'Time' (Not the one scored by IR). It is simple thing that we get bored if we have the same food all the week, like wise our ears can find a pattern in these mucisians and if we start to hear that clearly then we are done with them. It is until that time they are great...After that they become history!

  Good topic, though it could turn into a battlefield soon.
  
  Why do you choose MSV or IR or ARR as your favorite MD ? If you tell me it is the music style, depth, innovation … etc I would say they are part of the reasons, but the major influencing factor is the “time” in your life when you are actively listening, buying music and discussing it. When I say TIME I mean your age when you get more involved.
  
  I am a big fan of IR and started liking his music from 1978. During those years my friends were “hard core” MSV fans and never accepted IR as a MD. The reasons cited were : he copies music, he does nothing more than “dappanguthu”, his songs are good only for first time listening, cannot last long ….etc. etc..
  The same guys even today will say the same things though they would have definitely liked some of IR’s songs. We did not have the TFM forum to discuss and sling mud, but the situation was the same.
  I , on the other hand thought MSV was monotonous , lacked variety and was not innovative.
  
  It took me many years to appreciate MSV’s (though I personally think he was great as a combo with Ramamoorthy) music. But, after all my heart goes to IR. I grew up listening to his songs and every song of his reminds me of something in my past. His best , I reiterate , his best years are from 1977 to 1985.
  Period. Whatever he did past 1985 was more “assembly line” music with few bright moments. These bright moments were done for specific directors and demanding film themes. IR was fresh and composed wonderful melodies irrespective of the film and theme in those years. If you do simple math on his best and worst, a significant portion of his “average” songs are after 1985.
  
  “Aradhanai” a Suman movie that was absolute cra* did not deserve IR’s music. Yet, he gave one of his alltime greats “Illam Pani Thulir Vidum Neram” with a new singer “Radhika”. MSV on the other hand was simply marvelous in the sixties. “ Shanthi Nilayam”… a true “south Indian – sound of music” was one of his best. Who can forget the superb melody of SPB and Susheela ? Now, the question is do the current music fans like these songs ? No… they would have hardly heard these songs. What they see today and compare is ARRs “Kadalar Thinam” “Taj Mahal” with IR’s “TIME” , “NMK”….Lo… What a comparison for music abilities? To top all this, Deva comes in for comparison!!!! What the heck happened to our originality? I doubt if the current TFM has any.
  
  MSV, IR have done enough. IR is still around, but he has nothing to prove. May be, his kids do. ARR is growing, but I would not list this guy as “great” just because Bollywood is ga ga and his popularity is beyond India. In terms of performance, volume of songs, speed of delivery, range of compositions, IR has already set milestones. He may not be the most liked, marketing savvy MD, but somebody learns from ones mistake … like ARR did.
  
  Can ARR survive another 10 years ? Will he compose music for 10 films in a year ? Can he compose for a new unknown banner without any hype ? Let’s wait and see. Until then, he cannot get into the elite club
