How about providing links/pointers for IR’s sumaaru/mediocre/avg/ok songs that have not been great hits and/or very popular? Basically, there are many IR songs that fall in this category and this can be considered an attempt in bringing certain lesser known/unknown songs to light. The links will help us listen to the songs during the day at work place and/or as a pastime:) They could be good in patches or one may like a few specific moments of a song that would make them suggest the song to a friend. So, without being selfish share what you enjoy!
You can even supplement the link with a small note explaining what to look for in a specific song. I also request DFers not to post more than 5 (or maybe 10:)) links/pointers a day in total so that we can do some work, at work place.
PS: Post only when you have the links/pointers.

* Song: Oranjaram Film: Kakkai Chiiraginiley Singers: SPB
Link/Pointer: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/WW000A19
Not a popular song, this easy-going soft song based on a couple of ragas is set to a melodious tune. Tamil-English phrases like “Sonnadhu nammaalilla Martin Luther” find place in this song. Good rendering by SPB, melodious tune and interludes make it worth hearing.
* Song: Naenavu Thaerinja Film: Kakkai Chiiraginiley Singers: Mano, KSC

A decent song of it’s kind.

* Song: Vandemaataram Film: Kaalapaani (Malayalam/Hindi) Singers: Chorus
Link/Pointer: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/VV000A0K
Nice patriotic song marked by the usage of vocal harmony and violins and less of percussion instruments, as against the prevalent trend then. The mood changes during the interludes and goes well with the film. The second interlude tries to convey the mood of the hero feeling lonely without his beloved, and then imagining her near him only to realize that she isn’t actually, and again switching back to the main theme of patriotism.
This is certainly NOT a mediocre song by our filmi standards but has not become popular for various reasons. I felt this version to be better than the Tamil version in which Mano gets to sing as the main lead.

Song: Vaigai Nadhikkarai Film: Nilavae Mugam Kaattu Singers: HH
Song: Thannan Thaniyaga Film: Nilavae Mugam Kaattu Singers: IR
There is a sense of sadness of feeling lonely in this song and IR brings out those emotions well at certain places.

It is surprising how some of the songs get missed out.
Most of the songs of Poonthottam are good. (I don't have a Link or URL now - will try and search for it)Meanwhile If somebody already know, please give them here.
I like
Meetatha Oru Veenai
Vennilavukku Aasai
Iniya Malargal.

Couple of koothus.
* Song: Thanni Thotti Film: Sindhu Bhairavi Singers: KJY
Link/Pointer: www.dhool.com -> search for the movie “Sindhu Bhairavi”
I would rate this as the ”koothu song with best interludes”. It is not really a mediocre song and am listing here just because it happens to be less preferred by public as it is a koothu, and for the benefit of those who haven’t heard it keenly earlier. This kind of a song is unusual for KJY and makes it more special.
* Song: Adidaa MELaththai Film: Kannukkul Nilavu Singers: SPB & chorus
Link/Pointer: www.dhool.com -> search for the movie “Kannukkul Nilavu”
This is a modern koothu. Although I didn’t like it initially, I couldn’t help laughing at those weird/funny words that come in the pallavi and charanam, probably, because I am not used to them. Anyway, I would rate this as a better koothu in recent times. The interludes have minimal percussion that is unusual for this kind of a song.

Jeera,
Here you go http://www.dinakaran.com/audio/poonth/pontho.htm
Vanathu Thaaragayo by HH has more isai while Ponnumani Ponnumani is an ok koothu. How much of isai and osai in it? :-)

* Song: Urvasi (Sanskrit Disco) Film: Maharshi (Telugu) Singers: SPB
Link/Pointer: http://www.chakri-anu.com/mds/Ilayaraaja7.html -> look for the song Urvasi
The only Sanskrit song of its kind. A racy, beat oriented song that starts after the students have some witty time with their Telugu/Sanskrit lecturer. The beats are very original and only IR could have maintained such a pace thru’out the song, and yet, make it attractive. The interludes are very creative and nicely done, be it the way the first interlude starts or the second interlude ends. Director Vamsy would give at least one song to lyricist Vennalakanti (whom no others preferred:( ) and as usual, he does his job well. I doubt if any of the current singers can even utter this song. This is one of those “only for SPB” songs.
* Song: Konalo Film: Maharshi (Telugu) Singers: SPB, SJ
Link/Pointer: http://www.chakri-anu.com/mds/Ilayaraaja7.html -> look for the song Konalo
A soft and melodious song with fewer instruments. The interludes and the singers make the song very pleasant.
(btw, don’t miss Matarani Mounamidhi from the same film. It is a “complete” song – one of IR’s best. The second interlude is simply terrific.)
* Song: Ompula Vaikhari Film: April 1st Vidudhala Singers: SPB, KSC
Link/Pointer: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/XY00000010 -> Ompula Vaikhari
http://www.chakri-anu.com/mds/Ilayaraaja3.html -> Ompula Vaikhari
A neat rhythmic melody. In the first interlude, “Mangalyam thanthuna…” with modern beat might sound odd for some but suits the film (imaginary marriage against elders in a jovial manner). The second interlude is wonderful with some fantastic flute play.

* Song: Edho Edho Film: Manam VirumbuthE Unnai Singers: KSC
An soft, short song that has only one charanam. There is also a Mano’s version of the same.
* Song: Manasa KiLLi Film: Manam VirumbuthE Unnai Singers: SWL, MNO, SNS
In this song IR has used different rhythms for the male singers and the female singer.

* Song: Nethukudutha Vaartha Film: Kaathal Jaathi Singers: Karthik & chorus
* Song: Enna Maranthalum Film: Kaathal Jaathi Singers: IR
Slow sad songs that some may like.
* Song: Pottala Kaattula Film: Kaadhal Jaadhi Singers: YSR, KR, VP & chorus
A fun sung that goes well with the movie. Parts of the charanam and interludes are interesting. Laughed a little when “Yenda thikku vaaya, sangeedhatha chumma vudamaatayaada” comes. Some loose nerves I guess.

A small song that probably is the only one in TFM that sounds completely (english lyrics, pronunciation, music etc) western/modern. I liked it for its very original beats.
* Song: Thai Ariyadha Film: ArangEtra VELai Singers: Mano, SPS & chorus
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/WW000021
Pallavi by Mano is very melodious. The first interlude and charanam (by SPS) are set to one beat while the second interlude and charanam (by male chorus) are set to a much faster beat with some very good percussions. After listening to the second interlude and charanam, (ignoring the lyrics) I have been able to reject many of the beats that came later in TFM and even WM. Some may want to call it as todays’ cacophony then, much ahead of its time, but I find it quite well done:-)

I am listening to this song after quite some time..definitely not "sumaar" but perhaps overlooked
http://nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/cgi-bin/download.cgi?Vietnam_Colony_-_Margazhi_Maasam.mp3
This is one of those typical IR songs that is a seemingly happy song but nevertheless has a touch of pathos to it..great one..listen to when Swarna sings "lesaga yen manasu kaathula"..there will be a touch of pathos there due to the sivaranjani notes in the line..this song could have been elevated if SPB had sung along with Swarna.. and this song came sometime in the early 90s!!
One more thing you will realize after hearing this song is how badly Swarna has been (under)utilized by other MDs since then..

One more thing, with the great quality of the audio file you will hear the very good bass work in the pallavi (when she sings "oodhak kaathu") and in the interlude..also notice the humming of Swarna in the second interlude..I miss this IR of late
