Saravanan,
>> SPB touches the G note on the third octave. Isnt that high pitched!!?<<
well, I would not classify that as high notes, it is some where between Mid to high notes, if you know, what I mean :))

Raghu bhai,
I do agree to an extent that people living in the North may not have as much knowledge of SPB as compared to the other singing staltwarts that are present in the North. Well, you can atrribute this to SPB not singing alot in HF as compared to his south career. But this should not stop people in the North from noticing him in the times he did sing in HFM. In order to see SPB's versatality you have to look in the South because he has shown it more over there than in HF. This also applies to southies who do not know Rafi's greatness because they are too caught up in their own regional music. Those who know the best of both worlds regardless of where they are from (north or south) almost always point towards Rafi as the ultimate. Take a look at the southern artists who have that knowledge about both worlds and about Rafi such as SPB/KJY/IR ect. and they all keep on mentioning Rafi is the best. Even northern artists who have knowledge about both worlds say Rafi is the ultimate. Many north artists and people have also proclaimed IR to be one of the greatest MD's ever so that should show something as well. Anyhow there are people in the North who should do some research on south indian film music and find out about their greats. This also applies to many southies who have a limited knowledge about Rafi and other greats in HFM.
HFM is a common medium throughout India which is why you will find southies accepting it. Every region does have its own music and own culture but HFM is where the nation combines on one path and most regions throughout India adhere to it.
By the way, I am originally from Tanzania, Africa and am currently living in Toronto, Canada....just wanted to let you know. Raghu where about in the UK do you live ?.
Naaz,
I am not the same person who used "a.a" as an ID....I have always used my name only.

Great discussion furious at times though!. In fact, one should listen to most of the abovementioned singer's songs to make a worthy comment, else it's only lopsided.
In my opininon KJY stands above the rest. This is beacuse of his ability to blend classical and film music with ease. The key aspect is his voice which divine, soothing and mellifluous. SPB comes the second because, he is a master in modulating the songs to suit the particular song.
I would put the legend Rafi, in the third place with due respect to him. He had a beautiful soft voice. KJY and SPB used to hear great Rafi before they started singing, hence they have idolized him.
Sometimes it's very difficult to make out who is the best. If you hear Rafi's "Man Re.."or "Oh Duniya Ke.." we have an out of the world feeling. Same has to be mentioned about SPB's "Shankara" and "Koottathile Koyil Pura". If you hear KJY's "Devanganangal,Kaliveedurangiyallo and Neeraduvan" you feel heavenly.
But I can show inumerous tough songs of KJY and SPB, but MANY (not all, some are hell difficult!) of Rafi sahab's songs, though beautiful, are not that difficult to sing. Hindi language may take up your breath (on which Hindustani classicals are based), but it is a FACT that SI languages need more tounge flexibility (on which Carnatic classicals are based) and SI languages are more tough in pronounciation beacause of this. I have seen that NI can't pronounce all south indian words clearly whereas SI pronounce NI words clearly.(This, I have exprerienced talking to my NI friends).
Coming to KK, I can only say that he was a good singer. But he can't be compared with the three legends. But of course, if someone likes the harsh voice (someone may call it as manly voice) style as KK introduced, he/she may rate KK higher.
So may overall rating goes like:
Dr.KJY>Dr.SPB>Rafi Sahab>>KK
Of course,
KK>>Sonu>Udit>Kumar
No offence meant. This was my hubmble views. Others are free to object.

Aravaind,
who is KY?
>>The best Human Voice<<
so the rest of the humans sings like animals :)
KK being more Genius than SPB, hahah, haha, dude this is so funny haha
please do not go and tell this to KK fans :)
pal, KK is extremley versatile more than DR.KJY for sure, but certainly not more than Dr.SPB, no singer in India is as versatile as Dr.SPB!
Can Kk render any Classical / Carnatic based songs like SPB?, NO WAY,
Pick a hindustani song of KK/Rafi & I would produce a better list from SPB or KJY

How can u compare KK with modest singers like Sonu,Udit,Kumar???

I think everyone of them is a unique.
SPB can change his voice to suit the stars.
Rafi the best soft voice of all time.
KJY is the best when it comes to Carnatic songs.
Raghu,
SPB himself has admitted several times he's not as good a singer as KJY as KJY is formally trained in Carnatic music.
So your claim on SPB as the greatest can never be accepted.
If you don't know What I'm talking please listen to Sindhu Bairavi.
SPB could have never sung like KJY.
I don't know what you mean by Versatile, if modulating alone is Versatile then SPB wins by huge margin but if being grammatically correct and knowing and applying complex things in Music is versatile KJY is the king far ahead of SPB.

KK was a versatile singer. It was rough, having depth, but he nevr atempted to sing in very high pitches because of his range. But his voice used to have a captivating effect.
1. Mere naina..
2. Oh Sathi Re..
3. Chalte chalte...
4. Hume Tumse..
Sonu Nigam has good voice, though boyish and nasal. He emotes well (some may say crying) too.
But Kumar Sanu is unacceptable. Udit is better than him.

>SPB could have never sung like KJY. << true, but at the same time KJY COULD NEVER HAVE SUNG SHANKARAPARANAM LIKE SPB :)
This is from a man, who was NOT properly trained like KJY, BMK, TMS , GHantasala, PBS, Serkazhi Govinderan ,..., THIS CLEARLY SHOWS SPB IS THE GREATEST :)
Hari bhai,
I agree with you about Kumar, Udit and Sonu, but I really like KK's rough voice, he is a LEGEND, he should be compared with LEGENDS only :)

Dude That shows SPB's humbleness, in fact he said that about not Just KJY, but about afi , why even Unni Krishanan ;) Surely u r not going to say that Unni is better than SPB now are you :))
I have listen to Sindhu bhairavi millions time, I love KJY's Maha Ganapathim , excellent work by KJY & IR :), KJY's 'Thanni thotti thedi vantha' was bad!!, KJY went too thin and nasal at high pitches, it sounded bad, take 'Kalaivaniye' when he attempt to touch key 37, he sounded bad, Rafi, SPB & Lata are far more better than KJY in high pitches!

Dear all,
Can some one please, list all the singers and, all the films thye have composed for, I know SPB & KK was a successful composers in Tamil/Telugu & Hindi.
but did KJY score for any mallu films, or did Rafi score for any Hindi films, Melody queen SJ has composed for couple of Tamil songs, another singer to do that was M.vasudevan.
