Guys,
I was wondering wether there are any more songs in TFM other than "poongkatrile" in "paattu paadava" without any precussions .This song by IR was unique that there was no percussion with bass and rythym guitar giving the needed tempo. It was an amazing composition with great interludes.

Sridhar,
Sorry, I forgot to put in the disclaimer "IMHO" in my message. My message reads as if I'm a musician which is far from the truth. I have read technical postings by the likes of Srikanth, Ramasamy Gireesan, Vijay and others with much relish, but all of my musical knowledge is pure "Kaelvi Ngyaanam" derived from constant exposure to various musical genres.
So, I can't back up the claim about Unnidam Mayangukiraen technically, but is there another predominantly piano-oriented TFM song as good or better than V. Kumar's piece? I would love to know.

BTW, I hope my last lines are taken as a sincere question and not a defiant statement.

guys, have you listened to the stating piano
pieces of the song - 'ponn mane theudhea, enn veenai paduthe'. I found strange similiarity to
'unnidem mayungiren'. I have to warn you people, my ears not musically trained, it is just my
observation.

'yen vAnilE' from 'Johny' is a
beautiful song inwhich Raja used
piano throughout the song.
And in 'brahmmA' he has used bits and
pieces here and there in the song 'ivalOru'.

MPR, I'm certainly familiar with both the songs you have mentioned, but neither stands out as a song that depends solely on the piano. IR uses extensive orchestration in the Johny song and the Brahma song uses piano intermittently as you noted.
Even the old songs, "Paaduvor Paadinaal Aada Thoandrum", "Unnai Ondru Kaetpaen", "Ellorum Nalam Vaazha" (or the modern update of that song, "Aanandhamae Alaipaayuthae" by Gangai Amaran), and "Mezhugu Vathi Erigindrathu" all use piano quite a bit. But none of them excel in piano interludes or rely predominantly on piano like "Unnidam Mayangukiraen". Again, this is all IMO.

I agree with you, even I haven't noticed
much usage of piano in those songs and
other Raaja compositions like 'unnidam
mayangukirEn'. I just pointed out those
songs just because he used piano to certain
extend. Not only to piano, he didn't
do justice to guitar too. Many of his
songs have extensive orchestration like
you said. I wish Raaja will come up
without much orchestration and with heavy
usage of these instruments in future.

Clarification about "Thaen Sindhudhae Vaanam".
This song is sung by SPB & S. Janaki for the film 'Ponnukku Thanga Manasu'. MD for the film is GK Venkatesh; but Ilayarajaa composed this song.
"Unnidam Mayangukiren" sung by Yesudas is from the film "Thaen Sindhudhae Vaanam", composed by V.Kumar.
Another Piano song by V.Kumar is "enathu vaazhkai paathayil eriyum irandum theepangal" by yesudas in the movie "Mogam 30 varudam"

Dear Thenraja Kaliappan,
Is it "Thaen sindude vaanam" or "Thaen sindumm vaanam". I know it is a comedy movie starring sivkumar and kamalhasan in the lead.
any how, "Unnidam mayangukirenn.." is one of the best songs rendered by KJY.

Kalanjiyam
It is 'Thaen Sindude Vaanam'.
Another nice Piano song by Ilayarajaa is 'Uravugal Thodarkatahi, unarvugal sirukathai' in the film "Avan Appadithan" sung by Yesudas.

Guys:
I just got reminded of this timeless wonder which I think is without any percussion. The song is the only SSR song I like.
"Gnayiru enbadhu kannaaga thingal enbadhu kannaaga". I dont know how I could forget this song.

The beautiful song "Indirarum chandirarum" from "Avatharam" has no percussion beat either. It is a totally under-recognised song.

yes kaushik, the prelude of the song is a wonderful western classical piece.

I suppose we are discussing songs which are percussion free in TFM and not in IR compositions. Hence we may take a note of the songs ARR has composed too. The song "Anbendra Mazhaiyilae", "Thenkizhakku Cheemayilae", "thendarlae Thendralae" all are free of percussion. Especially, the last one rests mainly on piano (Keyboard ??) and is really a feast to the ears. There are many other songs which ARR had composed without using prcussion. Another good eg would be "Bombay Theme" where a bass note comes till the end accompanying the strings and wind instruments and no percussion is used.

Of course, The "chandirarum Sooriyarum" song is probably the only song in the tfm with a rhythm pace so high and played only by the violins. It is an absolutely beautiful blend of Indian folk - lyrics with a tune so western. the tune if played by a WC violinist would have been a misfit in the film. IR by singing it in a folk style had really been successful in fusing two very different styles of music. Hats off to IR!!

can anyone recollect and tell whether the song
"Ippadi oor thaalatu paadavaa " from avargal has any percussion in it. I suppose it has some good violin interlude.

"Theertha Karaiyinilae therku moolaiyil" from Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu by SPB is nearly an instrument-free song.

this is not tfm-but listen to this song from yatramazhi-thaimaavinthanalil-see how the violins and pizzicattos add to the acceleration.
