Dear CF G
My psuedo was not I Know, it is just know:-)
I never intended to sound authentic, I was just giving my point of view which u took as a fact. I first saw this program in my MAS flight back to madras in Dec 1999. I liked the digital quality of the recording which i felt was impossible to record from a live show. My statements are based on that experience.
I know u and have even gained a lot from your postings.May be your presence on stage makes you feel more about it. Ennaattam 10rubaa ticket kaaranukku idhula irukkum thappu puriyala. Mannichidunga gee.
This issue came on air long back when ARR did the MGR FILM CITY program. I remember at that time he even had a computer in front of him much to the chagrin of all others. He mentioned later that his music is not easily reproduceable on stage without digitising it. He said thats the way he works. This appeared in kumudham or something.
i feel i am leading your learned selves in the wrong direction. So, may be it is time for me to sit back and watch you all.

This is kind of shocking news, considering that ARR never involved in any controversies.

This is a very serious mistake being committed by Rehman, if he is knowingly allowing it to happen.
I agree with the writer, that in order to be religious, you do not have to be fanatical.
This affair is quite distasteful and has the potential to polarize the industry along religious lines.

There's so much hearsay in that article, it could be downright litigious. To what extents will people go to bring down someone from power is amazing. Calling Rehman a "mama's boy" is the kind of class shown by the freak (probably a Hindu fundamentalist)Swami who has brought down the sanctity of journalism another notch.
What's the proof that ARR's mother said anything, is it public record? Shall we say, assumption? How come this same mother didn't stop ARR from recording "Anbennum Mazhaiyilae" a song about Christianity? Isn't "Alaipaayuthae Kanna" a devotional song?
It's a shame to have to indulge such half-brained articles and their halfcocked writers.

Udhaya: I totally agree with you. This is journalism at its irresponsible worst! How the heck does anybody know that it was a ARR's mom who called the TV station (if at all even that is a fact) or for the "real reason" behind that call. Can Swamy "PROVE" that all of his speculation happened? I treat this news item as "sensational junk" and strongly encourage fellow DFers to do so.

I don't beleive this article. I wish it is not true. Eventhough this article is true, I always look at ARR as a good musician and a talented guy. I do not care about his character or personal life or mom's boy or whatever it is. more than half of good musicians are nut cases! If you read the history of great musicians, you'll feel bad to know about their attitude and personal life.
Definitely ARR's character is 100 times better than other musicians. He is very polite.
We'll talk only about what all good things he has done for us.

Guys,
If ARR has been polite/soft etc then why did he break with VM on a very small issue that VM requested him to reduce the dominance of his Music. Even on this issue, I read his mother's comment in Kumudham/Ananda Vikatan that she is annoyed about VM's open statements about ARR settling permanently in London and also about the open request of VM to ARR in KKKK audio release function.
I think he is being over influenced by his motherprofessionally which will bring his downfall pretty soon.

Actually indiainfo gave a valid response to everyone who sent them an e-mail. I can't help but think that maybe they are right on some of their points. The author of that article is a worker at India Today magazine and from the articles that I have seen of his, it doesn't seem like he did it with malice. I think that he is just trying to say that music should be music without religious interventions.

IMHO, such kind of pseudo-journalism (`sensationalism') peeping into the so-called tastes of family members of artistes, that too with a lot of guess work and gossipy stuff should be SHUNNED by us all!

Eden,
Well, I do agree on your point. I think that the author should have presented the article in a different manner altogether. To be frank, I thought that their write-up was poor and it seemed to have a tone of accusation, even if they were accurate on their facts, which I really am not sure about. I will post the mail from them below...

I feel that there is no smoke without fire, plain and simple. It is easy to dismiss this as pure hearsay etc, but even this is a pure assumption.
There is some logic in the writer's argument when he says that during early days, ARR could not afford to be too selective. Now that he is in a position of influence, it is possible for him to let his opinions show through more clearly.
I do concede the possibility that this may have been done by the "mama" w/o his knowledge. In that case, the fault is probably not entirely his, for this particular incident.
However, this is not the first incident of this kind that I heard about ARR's "secular" credentials and I am inclined to believe the article. I feel that it is in his own interest ( as well as the industry) to be more careful in such matters.

This is in response to your feedback on our article titled "Is Rahman a religious fanatic?" We appreciate your taking the time to send us your feedback. At the outset, we assure you that the Rahman story was never an attempt to defame Rahman or hurt the religious sentiments of anybody. Given
below are some facts:
The programme, on which the article was based, was aired on April 14, on SUN TV. Promos were run by the channel, but most AR fans missed the programme and the interview. The name of the journalist who is mentioned in the article is Kalyan Kumar, formerly with India Today's Tamil edition.
The story says that it was not Rahman who objected but Kareema Begum. The objections were to the visuals of Sivalinga and such in the mentioned song.
Intially it was to be a full length song but SUN TV on instructions from Rahman's mother cut off the 'offensive visuals' and telecast it but they are not telecasting the second episode because the channel got the message that the house of Rahman is not happy with the interview and hence dodging the issue by not giving dates. Kumar is in negoiatation with Asianet and Vijay TV to show the second part.
That Kasthuri converted herself and her children to Islam because a Fakir cured her daughter is not the common story. Dilip was struggling to make
ends meet when he met Ponneri Baba who told him that Allah will offer him an opening once and he should grab it.
Rahman's Vandemataram is a definite contribution to music. Our story was done after considerable research and talking to people. The name of the
author has also been mentioned at the end of the article.
In a nut shell, we reiterate that it is not our intention to hurt, but only to bring to light that Rahman's mother could not digest her son listing a Hindu song as her favourite. And our writer said that Rahman being the big name that he is, should have opposed this act of his mother.
We will continue to honor the tradition of integrity and honesty in our reporting and writing.
A Swamy
MY PERSONAL VIEW ON THE WHOLE ISSUE: ??? I don't much care...as long as ARR gives great music in the years to come. Hey people, check out the new picture of ARR at Vikatan in the Anu Akka Aunty section. He's gone back to his old hair style. Finally!

One thing I would like to say, considering I know him quite well. He adores Carnatic Music and that is certainly all with Hindu Gods in mind. I think that while his Mum has some control over his career, he will go by his own judgement and he's one who respects all relegions, as long as there's SPIRITUALITY there.
Yes, he's also finally cut his hair and is looking really good for it. He's off to New York and Toronto to sign the concert contracts today.....He will be back in London Next week, to work on Bollywood Dreams again.
