I just now finished listening to Friends.
'Thendral Varum' and 'Kuiluuku Koo Koo' are his best works in this. KKK is Classic IR...shows that he has not lost the touch that made 'Chinnathambi' a megahit but times have changed now...KKK reminds us of his late peak years before his decline.
TV is definitely melodious and the instrumentation and structure is controlled to suit younger audiences...pleasant to hear...recallable to...but nothing innovative.
All the others have got his quality stamp...but passable stuff. I forgot to add "Ruk Ruk" is definitely not fully IR...has got many touches of YSR in it...an attempt to present a song to youth by youth...
Verdict : Fans will be happy...those looking for something new and innovative can forget it.

ambleen,
the decline of IR began in 1992, shortly after Devar Magan. i'm sure most die-hard IR fans will disagree, but his music has never been of the same order as earlier. there's too much noise, and the music started sounding unimaginative. of course there have been exceptions like Hey Ram, Avatharam, and Barathi, but the bulk majority of his musical output has gone down several notches. i don't blame him, because tamil cinema itself underwent a major change for the worse at that point. probably he decided enough was enough, he was not going to waste his good music on worthless films.
all this is IMHO, dissenters welcome:-)))

cram,
I do agree.
I some time feel that he should rejuvenate some of his older 80s hits, give them a new life, get new lyrics done and present them to this generation. He was one MD who composed songs that were well-ahead of their times. And the new, young audience should be exposed to them.
If anything, it will atleast generate interest in their minds about his old numbers.
Remember the Boy Zone version of 'Words'? Once people got hooked to the song, they went in search of the BEGEES album featuring the number.
Well, in that case, it was a VERSION, performed by a different group, whereas in IR's case it will be his own songs.
This way, we can enjoy some of his best works in a better recording, CD-quality too. However, the emotional attachments we all have with some song may not be there. And I guess, that's fine.
It's not that IR hasn't done this before, but very rarely.. reworking on some of his Tamil songs in a completely diffeerent Hindi film, such as 'Mahadev', which had a 'Mudhal Mariyathai' song... Balu Mahendra's 'Aur Ek Prem Kahani' had a number from the Tamil 'Johny'.
It's nice to see ARR making full-use of the songs that got unnoticed in Tamil by turning them to Hindi projects. The latest is the 'Minnale, Nee Vandha(d) Enadi' song from May Madham.. He has given it a new lease of life in the Hindi film, 'Love You Hamesha'... Well, critics may dub it as lack of new ideas/creativity... but if it reaches more people, what's the problem? After all they are taking their own creations.

Two composers in one movie
Source: MusicMagazine.com
It's a combination that's expected to create memorable music. Ilaiyaraja, Hamsalekha and Ravichandran come together for the Kannada film Uyire.
Ilaiyaraja's relationship with the Kannada film industry goes back many years. He assisted G K Venkatesh on some big films, and then made music for films like Geetha and Janma Janmada Anubandha, whose songs are remembered and played at live orchestras even today, some two decades after they were first released. Incidentally, HMV has released a combination tape of songs from these two films.
The film is being shot in Suratkal near Mangalore, after which the unit will move to Bangalore.
Rockline Venkatesh, who has been producing blockbusters in Kannada, is the man who has brought these three big names together. Interestingly, two music directors are working on this film, with the junior one, Hamsalekha, writing the lyrics instead of making tunes. Prakash Rai, Rachana and Jyoti star in this love story.

Cram,
IR's decline?
Well the very word 'decline' in this context is very subjective. People tend to compare the post-90's IR vs pre-90's IR and many may want the former. As for me, i do not want him to keep doing or sounding the same. If he does that, then all those past scores or songs which we consider as gems now, won't be much of a gem will it?(bcoz of over abundance).
Hey Ram, Avatharam, and Barathi and many more will eventually become gems in abt 10-20yrs time.
HERE IS THE ALWAYS OVERLOOKED FACT:
Compare pre-90s IR & post-90s IR....you'll somewhat have different opinion abt which is better.
Compare IR vs the rest of the music adapters(anyone knows any other COMPOSER existing in Indian Film industry?)....you'll appreciate IR.
IR's quality has never declined or deviated. Its only the people's mind.

There cannot be a second opinion that "IR has LOST his midas touch".
His early days in 76s had experienced composers like Govardhan, DB Ramachandran etc as his assistants. Whatever may be his contribution, there were efficient people to supervise. The success which followed had rat race of gambling film makers (not producers) rushing behind him, leaving all other MDs and their musicians jobless. Even MSV accepted movies with a mind to allow work for MDs like KVM, Subbya Naidu, TR Papa etc. The latter half of IR had stalwarts like VS Narasimhan, to orchestrate and arrange the violins, Puru for the rhythms and Chandrashekar for the key boards. Paandu recorded at Prasad efficiently and lady luck worked out with this. It is not a one man IR show always. History says that IR rejected and avoided selfrespecting and fearless frank musicians and there is no second opinion that he lacked humility.
'Nirpathuvey' of Bharathi is an ulta of "Athikkai kai kai Alangai vennilave", the same chordings prevail and once again IR has theived a second melody. Bharathi songs lack emotional fervor. The patriots created by GRamanathan in Kappalotiya Tamilan and SinduNathiyin misai by MSV_TKR will disagree if anyone says that Bharathi sings this in the movie.
Nilavu Parthen is similar to Aval Varuvala of Aasai. Again theiving a second melody. What happened to IR? He does what Deva did with IR songs during his entry. That isnt great for a maestro whose symphony is eagerly awaited. HeyRam wasnt great at all. A useless expensive Rerecording of a symphony investing crores(?RBF)and a boost up with Karthikraja in Vikatan interview, could have been easily and comfortably done with Indian musicians in Kollywood far better. IR and his son KR basically need a change in attitude towards other HUMANBEINGS, which for a change, is only with Yuv.SR the second son on date and he gives hits.
It is time for him to think too little about himself and too much about music. Only then his music will escape the jaw-breathing fatality.
