neels, bb,
All the songs in KD were penned by Vaali.

Oops!! I gooffed up. Vaali is getting inspired by VM. Watch out VM, Vervai, Kaaichal and Devi are your trademarks!
I was listening to Sowkiyama Kanne Sowkkiyama from Sangamam. A melodious composition very well rendered by the singer. Effortless singing of a not-so-easy-to-render song. Is it Bombay Jayashree or Nityashree?
Flip-side:
Pronunciation was a bit jarring at times ("Soggiyama", Sowkkiyamaa)but not so bad as Jayashree's Iruvar song.
It's a refreshing classical composition (probably set to raagam Maand a la Oru Naal Podhuma (Thiruvilayaadal)???).
Somehow this song reminded me of Nalam Thaana from 'Thillana Mohanambal': Probably because of the similarity in the lyrics.

Guys,
Please be "Objective" and tell me if the songs Sangamam(Except "Vaaraga..") are even worth listening the second time. "Sowkiyama.." is a pathetic song. ARR is good in blending Carnatic into Fast-Paced songs but portrays himself very "shady" when it comes to compose a complete carnatic song. The interludes are pathetic. And the Charanam lacks lustre. I'd prefer listening to "Songs of Oothukadu Venkata Iyer" by Suresh Peters rather.
"Markazhi Thingal" resembles "Kannalane " from Bombay. Lets face it, ARR is losing stuff.
Taal is not much different from "Dil Se" in style. Not to mention, he once quipped, "Taal will bring out the Punjab in me". Saar....
And HAHAHA for the Fiasco of the ceremony in Germany. IF Deva can be the "Tanpura Player" in Yanni's troupe, I can't accept that he's achieved something great.
And as usual, we have fans saying, "that song is a marvel". "It is the right mix of 'Kamboji' and 'Maya Malava Gowla', set to 'Misrachapu Thalam' with a 'Malaysian Pop Beat'. 'He's done it again, Hats off to ARR'.

PS: Please read "Compose a ..." as "Composing a ...", in the second line

Hi Vimal,
There is no need for anyone to be so against ARR. Appreciate the good, wherever it is. If he has represented India in the German show, it is indeed something to feel proud of. Atleast be proud that a guy from Madras is acclaimed so much. He is much better than the guys from north who just lift his tunes. So, don't put a constraint on yourself...listen to his songs objectively and rate them. By the way, I am a great Ilayaraja fan.
cheers,

Anush, you have reflected my sentiments. The only point is that ARR is also trying to be unoriginal sometimes. This is what sucks.

And so the record is broken!
I was wondering where the ARR bashing had gone.
Call me names if you want, but I am not ashamed to enjoy Sangamam very much. No pussy-footing around. :-)))

Hi,
IMO Sangamam is THE best completely folkish album for the last couple of years .Of late IR's albums like Kummi Paattu etc are becoming more and more like his earlier compositions for Kasthuri Raja like Naattupura Paattu ,Veerathalattu . The same beats ,similar tunes , IR is running out of stuff ! At least ARR tries out a few variations in his albums , irrespective of the success of his improvisations.

Hey Hrishi,
If you call Sangamam as "Folkish", oops, sorry, "Completely Folkish", then what about the songs of Veerathalattu or Nattupura Pattu, songs of western movies starring Clint Eastwood?
Moreover, in which Gramam do they use Sax? Please enlighten me. I never knew that the Sax has become a part and parcel of Nattuppura Kalai.
Can I give you an example of ARR's lack of Originality or rather "Laziness"? He uses a Casio to give the sound of a Nadaswaram. Eg: Some song in Padayappa, which I didn't even bother to listen for the second time. Puleez, please don't brand his gimmicks as "Improvisatiuons". He composes music immaterial of the situation or the ambience involved in the story. I never know of any Brahmin lady singing "Ottakatha Kattikko..". Can any couple from the country side sing a duet with the beats more or less similar to MJ's "Who is it"? Well, you got the answer in the song "Athangara Marame".
C'mon, I do hate IR for many of his recent albums, but ARR is nowhere when compared to the genius and creativity of IR.
According to your theory, then Deva should be branded the "Father of Improvisation", as he claims that all of his Ganas are based on some Carnatic Raga or the other.
Talking about Deva, TFM'kku eppa vidivu kalam varumo...

Hi Sriram Mama,
Thanks for the advice !!!
Vimal,
IR at present is so badly out of ideas that he does not even have gimmicks .Call it original or laziness whatever it is , every one of ARR's albums sets a new record in sales. Face it, he is the number 1 at present with Deva of all people a distant second. I readily agree that ARR has a long way to go to reach IR but talk abt the present when people like SAR, Deva have overtaken IR ! IR has to dig deep into his resources to come up with a brilliant album , else he will be forgotten in this rat race .
Bye

Happened to listen to Sangamam on the net.
I did not like any of the songs on the first hearing.
In Taal, Nahin Saamne is very good - good WC, pleasing tune and coloration. Ishq bina and kahin aag lage are pleasant. the rest did not make any impression.

Hai Hrishikesh..... u got wrong figures.... i remember reading in kumudam and in one of the threads in TFM that IR is 2nd in cassete sales.... and ARR's album setting records!!!!... i dont believe it this year.... ESK did not move at all and PYRAMID had to do some gimmick by putting one more CD free with a good collection of old ARR's songs... .well the CD still did'nt move.... iam not sure if Padayappa would have been a hit if not for Rajini.....
and i believe IR still has ideas, but people here simply does'nt want to listen to it.... many of his albums this year were good, still no one listened to it....

Pyramid was giving a free CD with ESK from the FIRST DAY. They did the same with Padayappa too. So I guess it didn't sell well either in spite of Rajini. ;-)
My guess is that this gimmicks are to combat piracy and also to be used as bargaining chip for the next ARR album. Both show only how popular this guy is.
They aren't giving any freebies with Sangamam bacause the movie is Pyramid's own production.

Happened to listen to the THEME MUSIC of Rakshagan on the Net.
ARR seems to have been greatly 'inspired?' by Terminator's theme music. Have you guys noticed?
A 'Northie' pointed this out to me and I was quite embarassed.. you give them one chance, and they will start equating the ARRs with the Annu Maliks. Why does he (ARR) have to copy when there's absolutely no need to?
Thank God, my friend doesn't know anything about Deva!!!

Hi Shyam and Sabesan,
I'm in India and my views are from what I gather from the cassete dealers in Coimbatore who say that an ARR film album is a sure sellout. Maybe it is the case abroad where Pyramid had to do some free CD giving ,etc .But for an Indian film , 90% of the market is in India and hence only the sales in India matters more!
Bye

Hey Guys,
If any of you guys are in the US, you can listen to the ad. for "The Muppets Show" in the radio(FM). It has a conglomerate of music and one of them is just the starting piece of 'Kuluvalile'. It is really surprising. I was listening to it just when I started to type thus post.
The diff. between Deva and ARR is that Deva is stupid enough to copy songs of known artists but ARR goes international(Please identify one of Deep Forest's number in the beginning of "Thillana Thillana.." and likewise, "Netru Illadha Matram.." is a copy of a song called "Sunday I'm in love..". I forgot the name of the British group behind this song. Deva is so stupid that he "ATTA COPIED" one of Colonial Cousins' number (goes like 'Dheemtha Dheemtha dhirana') and makes Hariharan, who is a part of the duo sing that song in Tamil for a Parthiban movie! He is ruling TFM now, like it or not. I beseech you, please don't call him a "Creative Genius"!!. Please...!
All I try to prove is, ARR may be talented but he can't be termed a "Genius". It is a word with a very strong character. His one non-filmy album, Vande Mataram is a masterpiece, not in terms of music but in terms of Marketing Strategies. It was blown out of proportions. The album sucks. The works by "Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad" like 'Mile Sur Mera Tumara" or "Baje Sargam.." are much better in quality and patriotic fervor.
All I wonder is, folks, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR MUSICAL TASTE?????
