Mahadevan:
I think tamil films will never be superhits because of music alone. Music will definitely elevate a film to a different film if the film is handled properly.
IR gave great music to K Rangaraj films but the movies were also very well made. If you think IR has made those films a hit, then what has happend to "kkadhal oviyam", "Aananda Raagam","idhay koyil"....all had superlative songs from IR but the movie never clicked.
All these publicity talk looks to me as an avenue to seek excuse, why IR is more wealthy and more powerful than ARR, if he wants the numero uno pretty desperately...why not he indulge in this.
Truth is, he won't because he knows very well for a song to be a hit it needs a good music and not publicity.

HI
There is no logic in comparing ARR and IR. Its liek comparing Gaveskar and TEndulkar or MAradonoa and Ronaldo. Can we compare them? These older people are legends and these young ones has to prove alot before they can reach that level. For ARR, he have to do many different kind of movies with new directors , new actors etc. At present ARR music is well lvoed by all but for him to be a legend like MSV , IR he has a lot to prove in the music world.
Bye

I have been listening to Iruvar quite a few times today (to compare two amps). I am very impressed with ARRs work in this movie. Very good recording and nice tunes.
I think IR has to learn not to fade his orchestra to the background when the vocals come on. I think he is getting better with KM->Poonthottam. Everybody has got something more to learn !!
(Funny though that IRs song can be sung by a beggar on the street and you would stop to listen to it. I listen to Vanaththu thaarakaiyo in Poonthottam many times even though I am impressed with the music in Iruvar).

Rekha says 'I loved Arr's DIL SE'
I shall make use of simple present instead of past perfect.
I say "I love IR's Poonthotam"
"I love IR's KM"
"I love IR's Ninaivellam Nithya"
"I still love IR's Annaikilli"
"I always love IR's Punnagai Mannam"
With IR.. there is no "loved"...

I have nothing against ARR. He is doing something not one in a thousand of us can do. A popular name in Indian cinema now..
only when it comes to music.. there is this Great genius from the south (((IR))).
I would'nt be much suprised if ARR were a big fan of IR.

krishna,
Well, he doesn't seem to be one! I one of his interviews he said he hasn't listened to any of his (or any TFM md)as he might get inspired from them. Later in another interview he added, saying he liked inji iduppazhagi.

One more to the list of songs/BGM copied by ARR!!
The piece that is played whenever kamal executes his plans in Indian is an alt-X & alt-V from the BGM of a sci-fi free jack.

Yov, pozhuthu pogalainna solitaire aadrathu thaane, yeanyaa ippadi naattai kedukkireenga?

Coming to more important things, how come you don't hang out at the HUB?

Udhaya:
Yen machinela solitaire illa :-( IBM'la romba ushaarayitaanga ippo !!!
If I didn't put that IMO, some adhigaprasangee will come and ask me to *prove* that ARR is not a good MD :-))) Vambu senchaalum, naama adhula maatikka koodadhu :-))) Yenna oru arumayaana policy, paatheengala ?
As for the HUB, espcially the kavithaigal topic, I feel some kind of an inferiority complex creeping in :-) whenever I read yours and others' lovely poems. What's worse is that I cannot even vimarsichiffy the poetry there, forget participating actively :-((( But I guess I could atleast learn some stuff by spending some more time there !
Udhaya, don't you think it is a good idea to keep reviving the useless-but-most-popular topics from the archives ? :-) That way it'll keep others from opening duplicate topics (there are atleast 3 on song picturisation, including one from me :-)) and will also restrict the fights to certain topics !!!

ARR never heard IR's songs?? We have many versions to this Q. Some say he indeed said he
refrains from IR's music to avoid
getting inspired. Some say he liked one song from Devar Magan. But, in the rediff chat,
he himself agreed that he once was in
a light music band that played IR songs. Which version is true???

I didn't want to post in the Dravidian Movement thread without having anything of significance to talk about, as I think it is a pretty serious topic. Meanwhile, I am keeping myself occupied by trying to reactivate the !hottest! topics from the archives :-))
Ravi:
If you are listening, do we have any real numbers on the non-transient population in the DF ? I was just curious :-) Hey, why not advertise a topic from the Hub in the most active discussions each week ? That might bring in more activity there !
And, how about changing the "Song of the Month (quarterly ;-))". I have also posted some suggestions in the discussion there. Perhaps you could consider some of them !
