5. Gangai Karai thottam, kanni Penkal Koottam, kannan Naduvinile. There was a
"mayakkam" in this song. I am not able to recollect now. I am sure someone could assist me.
Manisekaran what you mean by 'Mayakkam'????

hi
Padikkatah medhai song, i am not sure, goes like
"thangathile oru kurai virundhaalum" and not like
"thangathile oru kurai irundhaalum".
kuraivu is less in weight, amount, etc
Even "kurai" has several meanings (many of them
are same as kuraivu). So they can be used
interchangeably.

ss,
I too feel that in 'pal aada'
the 'aattam' is a metaphor that
highlights the
glittering teeth when the girl laughs and
not a dental care situation!
Like adiththal is used in sight-adiththal, kappi adiththal..
aattam was used. But the kavi-manam missed that aattam also had a literal meaning in this context!

The "Mayakkam" is karuthu mayakkam, not fainting away.
MARX:
it is "thangathile oru "KURAI" irunthaalum.

WHy dont we continue discussing on topics like this-instead of fighting over neer, neruppu, aagayam?
Let me reinitiate the discussion with a lovely song by PS in 'paadhakanikkai'
Kaadhal tholviyil thuvandu irukkum oru pennin
manadhai evvalavu azhagaaga padam pidithirkkiraar
Kavignar

I dont have words to praise the second charanam-no one could have explained the pain more beautifully and simply than our kavignar.

Ramki,
'ettadukku ' was a one of kannadasan's master piece. I think it was written when ANNA died( correct me if i am wrong). 'pagalile chandiranai' is an excellent song. I have that song in one of my cassettes. Another 'urukkamana' kannadasan song is 'attivaithAl yAroruvar' . Please correct me if there are any errors ( i donot have a source to verify if it is really kannadasan, but i am sure no one else could write that!)
Film: avanthAn manithan
Situation: Sivaji loses almost of all his wealth in giving away to the needy , esp his friend(muthuraman). When muthuraman sends kannan (kid) (on a gokulashtami day), to sivaji's house he narrates his wish, agony to the kid.
Sometimes few lines puts you in tears when you sing this.

About "Ettadaukku malaigaiyil"...I heard that kannadasan wrote it when he had "karuthu" differences with "Anna" over a distinction that had to be showered on him ..but was showered on karunanidhi(Apparently, karunanidhi took credit for some work done by kannadasan) . It can be seen from the second line:
"Verupattu nindraanadi", which I think must refer to "differences in opinion rather than anna's passing away.
I believe Kannadasan had differences with anna during the latter's lifetime itself. Another song that is supposed to be written with this in mind is:
"Annan kaattiya vazhiyamma,
Ithu anbaal vilaindha pazhiyamma...
Kannai imaiye something-which-i-dont remember-now..
Enn kaiye enna adithadhamma"
As usual, we have to depend on manisekaran to clarify

All of us are familiar with the aththikkAi
song of Kavinjar. But do you know that Kavinjar
did an unsuccessful first attempt at kAis in the
movie, uzhavukkum thozhilukkum vandhanai seyvOm
long before the aththikkAi song? That song
goes as follows...
kAi! kAi! avaraikkAi!

I went back to the old responses and had a pleasant read. Manisegaran (our history book) had given the background of this song, it's a must read for those who adore Kannadhaasan. Anyway, here's the song in its entirety, I think:
oru koappayilae en kudiyiruppu
oru kolamayil en thunayiruppu
isaippaadalilae en uyirthudippu
naan paarpathellaam azhagin sirippu
kaaviyaththaayin ilayamagan
naan kaadhal pengalin perundhalaivan
naan nirandharamaanavan azhivathillai
endha nilayilum enakku maranamillai
Kannadhaasan wrote himself a fitting epitaph.

ettadukku maaligaiyil refers to the human body/mind - according to the siddhargaL there are 8 cavities/levels. The thalaivan here refers to God. There's also another song using the same simile - ettadi kuchukkulle muruga ethanai naaliruppen, oru machhu veedu kattithaarum thiruthani velavane...Recollected from a kannadaasan appreciation book I read several years ago.

Udhaya:
You mixed the second and third paragraphs. They
should be:
kaaviyaththaayin ilayamagan
naan kaadhal pengalin perundhalaivan
paamara jaadhiyil thani manidhan
naan padaippadhanaal en pEr iRaivan
maanida inaththai aattivaippEn

naan nirandharamaanavan azhivathillai
