TamilCinema.com rates Kannukul Nilav as 'C', but the actual review page is missing. Was it so bad?. May be its good but not going to be a success. If it is so..its going to be hard luck for IR.

I saw KN and liked it. Felt it was a very tipical Fazil movie. The BGM is amazing at certain parts. But, there are certain parts where there is no music, that I felt Raja could have helped out.
As for the songs, only a bit of the song 'chinnachiru kiliye' is there. I felt ripped off here because that is my favourite son from the album.
Also, the famale version of 'oru naal oru kanavu' appears as a bit song in the background.
All in all, it is quite a good movie. It should click in the box office especially since there is very little competition this pongal.

Friends, HEY RAM title song has already entered the top 20 in the Rediff Site which says "Hey Ram makes a dramatic entry into the top 20 of this week!"
I think with time, the song by Asha Bhosle and Hariharan will top the charts....
I played it to a couple of hostellers here - all of them from the North - I found it difficult to get the cassette back from them - it all now depends on how Kamal markets the audio in the satellite channels

poor north indians...!
rediff had top in their list even those junks like aathi kya khandala . Unless IR comes up with numbers to match songs like kuRkku siRuththavaLe and azhagana rAtchasiye , which are most lilting , invigorating tunes of 1999, his tunes of lates 90's will never be remembered. He should lay more emphasis on melody when maitaning his standards to be 'sounding different'. He sure can do it.

Review for KN at Rediff.com says:
"Ilayaraja's music is melodious and soothing. The songs Iravu pagale thedi, soulfully rendered by Yesudas, and Nilavu pattu nilavu paattu, by Hariharan, are outstanding"

It looks like Hey ram hindi casettes sales are not good in Nj. Even in the first week of the album release, they are selling it for $2, which they normally do only for 3 months old albums.
IMO, Hindi version is not as good as Tamil, I think lyrics are also very not that catchy in hindi.

The marketing of the album (by Universal) is not at all good, atleast in India. They had a stylish album-release function though. IR couldn't make it, as he was away in Hungary doing the BG score. Wonder what Kamal (and Bharat Shah, the diamond king, who is distributing the film in Hindi) are doing about PR?
I have to say something about the computer-graphics used in the songs on the promos. The morphing of a woman to a gun et al is very very tacky. Hope this doesn't feature in the film and remains a promotional item.
One of my friends, Sumant Rao has actually worked on the Graphics for the film, with a team of Americans. I have yet to speak to him on this. Hope he throws more light on this feature!
Coming back to the album, IMO the party song sounds like a Jatin-Lalit number from a '90s movie and does not have the 'feel' of the late-Forties. Wonder if the composing&synchronising-after-shooting&editing has anything to do with the result?
Even though the Ajoy Chakraborty song and the Asha-Hariharan duet are excellent, going by the popular Hindi taste, the numbers are going to go unnoticed. I do hope the film brings out the beauty of these songs.

KN - reviewed in Hindu. The following is the comment on music.
Another indisputable highlight is of course, Ilaiyaraja.
``Oru Naal Orukanavu'' by Anuradha Sriram and Jesudas where the excellent beats
and melody make a fiesta, ``Roja Poonthotam'' by Unni Krishnan and Anuradha
Sriram and ``Iravu Pagalai'' sung by Jesudas which is bound to keep the listener
humming it for long, are among the irresistible numbers.
But the crowning glory is the re-recording - the melody that gently falls on your ears
and soothens your mind just before the interval and the soul- stirring notes in the last
scene are splendid.

WHEN STIRRING carnatic music filled the air in Chennai during the just concluded season, Ilayaraja was far away, making music himself with classical instruments.
The land is Hungary and the score is for ``Hey Ram''. The music maker preferred to use classical music instruments, and record a symphony for the ``period film'' genre. This is not the first Hungary-based venture for Ilayaraja. He scored the music for a film by Rajeev Anchal with five musicians of the foreign land.Incidentally, Chennai itself is a big name in the music re- recording scene. After the days when music recording in the country was largely done in Calcutta and later Bombay, then Madras became the choice destination. The first multi-track stereo-recording was done in Chennai, by Ilayaraja, who also composed computer-based music creating another significant milestone.

Looks like IR is proving yet again that he is a seasoned pro at his job in using a full scale orchestra for the BGM for Hey Ram. This is standard procedure for most of Hollywood movies (like the DragonHeart movie I saw yesterday). We should consider this as a major quality improvement in Tamil/Indian movies.
Also, it looks like if our MDs have to get international reputation the overall or complete quality of our movies also have to come to international standards. Hopefully, there are more people like Kamal in our industry who are committed to quality and big projects so that our talents in various fields can be showcased.
