guys
having been an ardent IR fan for the past 15 years, I had been extremely disappointed with his recent compositions in Aandan adimai,Kathal sathi etc etc. So I didnt even hear Kaasi songs until now - after reading the reviews for Kaasi, when I decided to listen Kaasi - I couldnt believe it - It is veryyy melodious and I hope Kaasi will be an evergreen hit.
IR is the best and I am eagarly looking forward to listening to his next album!!!

suren,
I think the reviewer means the magic touch is missing, and then talks about Hariharan mela, There also she didn't say anything like songs are good ... So, ...

guys
sorry for my digression - "Aatma" songs have been uploaded in raaga.com. In that album there is a song "Vaarayo" by Mano - A melodious song - may be an unrecognized gem by IR.

vem , in the same tune as "vaarayo unakke saran naangale" in aatma, IR had already scored "kaamatchi karuna vilasini, vedham naangil vazhum deviye" in a devotional album named 'ilaiyaraajavin geethanjali'...it touches your heart, it is a moving song...superb

" Apart from clips and films screened during the course, Baskaran showed for a wider audience Gnana Rajasekaran's "Bharathi", Rajiv Menon's "Kandukondein, Kandukondein" and Balu Mahendra's "Sandhya Ragam". His other lectures included one on `The Music of Tamil Film Composer Ilaiyaraja" and it turned up a surprise: the considerable knowledge several Americans present had of the composer's work!"

Hey,
Ilayaraja is known for setting trends in tamil film music for about 15 years. He travelled in different directions taking us with him during this period. A lasting phenomenal achievement.
Rahman put an effective end to this with his so-called sound engineered efforts. Save this singular direction that Rahman showed, he hasn't taken us anywhere else. This will be his limited achievement.
Strangely, Ilayaraja has not been able to stem the flow in tamil music towards this 'Rahmanic mania'.
The question is, will Raaja be able to create a form of music that will break this trend, or do we have to wait for Rahman or another Rahman to achieve this?
Sadly, tamil music is desperately in need for a change and a new lease of life. Or, is this reflective of the sickness in global music trend.
What say IRFANS or ARR fans visiting this site or the Musifans?

Rather than discussing this over and over again amongst IR fans, why not someone who is in touch with IR, ask these questions to IR?

Music fan, you have to do a deeper analysis than what u have said above.
See if u can make sense of these equations
IR = IRMusical Genius(IRMG) x [Tamil Folk (Tfl) + Carnatic(C) + Hindustani (H) + Western Classical(WC) + Classic Rock(CR) + Disco (D) + Spanish/Latin rhythms (S/Lr)] - ARCG
ARR =
ARR Creative Genius(ACG) X [1/2(Tfl + C + WC + CR + H + WC + CR + D + S/Lr) + 80s pop + Electronica (Er) + Ambient (Ab) + Urban/R&B (URB) + Jazz (J) + Blues (B) + Alternative (A) + Metal (M) + World/folk (WFl)] - IRMG
ARR and IR operate on completely different canvases the only shared reference is Tfl + C + WC + CR + H + WC + CR + D + S/Lr).
It is like - a father who is an Electronics Engineer adept at designing electronic circuitry and a son of this generation who is a Hardware engineer.
The dad is extremely skilled at troubleshooting at the circuit level.
The son is an expert at computer assembling and troubleshooting and just has to replace boards and doesnt have to waste time reparing circuits.
That is the need of the hour and the son is proficient at that. The father can do it too but is not interested as he feels that he is too old for that.

And the son doesnt feel the need to go to his dad's level of complexity and expertise as it is not required in his profession. Both earn the same name and fame.

cosmician,
thanks for bringing clarity in my thoughts with your equations and analogy. the question remains, what is going to change the state of 'tamil film music'? do the musicologists in this forum have suggestions or clues which the MDs can make use?
Cosmician, does the depression in software industry thought to be due to the 'rat race' and 'mass movement' thereby diluting the software needs hold true for tamil film music as well?

IR & Rajini have been doing umpteen social intiatives in Thiruvanaamalai. Rajini in fact layed roads around the holy hill. When Jayalalitha took over as CM, she chucked out IR from the 'THIRUVANNAMALAI THIRUPANI COMMITTEE'. But IR finished the RAJAGOPURAM work with his money and all was well when PAINTING issue came up. IR had said that 'multi colours' should not be used as this will divert the attention of devotees, and thus 'single' colour has to be used. The 'HINDU ARANILAI' thurai (Govt entity) now has remarked that PANCHAVARNAM (Five colours) have to be used, and IR's opinion should not be considered since he is not the committee member anymore. (Well, that was atrocious. Why was this ARANILAY THURAI silent when IR/Rajini spend their money?)...If u r a spiritual enthusiast, u can register your views in the link below..

IR is really pained and has written a open letter to the THIRUPANI commitee.

While Vikatan has praised Kaasi's music, Kumudam pans it. Says things like 'Raja used to be the hero of movies where the lead actor is a singer and look at Raja's state now...hmmm' and so on.
This is not to insult Raja but to point out the way Mags think. Anyway, Vikatan is known more for its balanced and sensible reviews than Kumudam which is known more as a sensationalist magazine.

Music fan..u have a point there..TFM is really vibrant with a lot of new talent and fresh faces but how original are they going to get is anybody's guess...
ARR is already 10 years old in the industry today...he doesnt seem to be interested in the industry's rat race like IR....they seem to be fiercely following their own likes and dislikes when it comes to composing...they dont seem to be going in for "Ear candy" for the youth as HJ and others seem to be doing....YSR and KR are providing quality but to what exent can they innovate remains to be seen...

Karthik S,
I don't want to complain, But Looking at this post and the way you ignored Subbudu's praise on YSR in some other thread, it looks as if you are projecting all -ve things about IR & family (While we all are projecting all +ve things, Agreed ;-)
Anyway, Madhan didn't write Kaasi review this time in Kumudam, I donno why ....
Cosmician,
Just curious, Does HJ got any movies in hand - Except Arjun's Arasaatchi ?
